RE: Looking for a BP around $250
The Knight Revolution I so not know that much about. I talked to a person that bought one and he said it shot real accurate, but did not alway ignite the 209 primer and was going to send it back to Knight. Whether it was fixed to his satisfaction, I have not checked back with him.
The Knight Disc is a bolt action style rifle. I own one. It is a good shooting well made rifle, capabile of some impressive accuracy. Besides the Disc there is the Disc Elite, and Disc Extreme. All of them are some of the best shooting rifles I think Knight made. The Black Diamond by Thompson Center is a real nice rifle. It has a free floating barrel. 1:28 twist, handles all three ignition systems.. #11, musket, or 209 primer. They are a very well balanced and excellent shooting rifle. I own one and they will really impress you. They are a hammer/striker model rifle, so they are open breech, but I would not let that worry me. For a hunting rifle, this one will get the job done. I do not own a Kodiak, but have read some impressive posts on their accuracy and the way they handle. I am sure some of the Kodiak owners will commment more about them for you. Check your local Wal mart and do some google on the different models. On some of the auction sites they can be got pretty reasonable... |
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
You can get the TC Omega for like 300 bucks in blue/black at Cabela's right now. I got mine for $260 with discounts.
I own the TC Woods Rifle which is basically a cheap Black Diamond. I love that gun as well. It's well built, accurate, and has the great lifetime warranty. I don't like the CVA Kodiak's any longer but others have great success with them. Personally, I think the Omega is worth the extra cash hands down. I don't like the Knight Revolution for two reasons. One, it doesn't hold/handle to my liking and Two, the primer holders seem like a pain in the arse. I prefer the design of the Kodiak/ Omega much better. The design of the Kodaik is great--it's the barrelsI hate. Do some researching on Google and you'll be sure to find lots of info. Pick the gun that's best for you but DON'T SETTLE. I learned it the hard way. Get the best gun you possibly can that you like best. Good luck to you and let us know what you get. |
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
Thanks for the imput. I did notice the TC Omega in the Cabelas catalog for $329 and it seems like a good deal.If I could get one for $260 that is probably be the way I would go. I was wondering about the Revolution and the primer holder. It does seem like it could be a pain. I want to keep it simple. I will some more checking but right now I am leaning to the TC Omega or Knight Disc.

RE: Looking for a BP around $250
I saw an all black Omega at a local Wal Mart for $189.00. If u find a WM that has them now is the time to get a deal. U might also want to see what ML supplies they still have. They are clearing out the hunting stuff now!

RE: Looking for a BP around $250

RE: Looking for a BP around $250
Thanks for all the help everybody . I can get a Omega Z 5 with the premium pack for $290. The kit has a lot of things and it looks like it comes from TC in a package deal. From what I can tell, about all a person would need to start shooting is the powder and a target. With only 10 sabots and bullets, it wouldn't take long to run out of ammo. This might be my best deal. What do you guys think? I have my Dad checking with a friend that sells a lot of guns. He is going to see if he can get me a good deal. We might be able to do some trading with him and get a little better deal.
|
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
$290.00 is a great deal for the package z-5. Impact guns sells that same package for $315.00. I see that wal-mart sells the z-5 realy cheap if you can find the stores thatneed to get rid of them. Last season the prices on z-5's were under 200.00 in some walmart's . good luck in your search.

RE: Looking for a BP around $250
Actually almost everything that I have tried in the Omega shoots great.
Same here, but some are better than others. I like the 300 grain bullets and 110 grains of Pyrodex in mine. I tried PB's and they were pretty good--in 240 grain. I also tried 230 grain bullets and they were decent enough for me. It's hard to have a really bad load in the TC's. My favorite bullets for it are the SW's or the XTP's. Let us know what you get. I'm interested to hear. |

The gun guy told my Dad that stainless is the way to go with black powder guns. He is going to make a deal for the stainless Omega. He said not to worry about the money, he would take care of it.He is always having me do wood working projects, so I guess that willhelp pay for it. Thanks for all the help. When it starts warming up some, I will take your suggestions on bullets andstart shooting. Do any of you shoot the pellets? I have a 3x 9 Simmons thatI willuse, not much of an open sight shooter. Whatbrand of primers do you guys suggest? If anybody wants to find prettydecent prices on gun then go towww.gunbrokers.com.

RE: Looking for a BP around $250
How does your Omega shoot conicals, likemaxiball, maxi-hunters, GPs, or powerbelts? If you ever try them, do report your findings.
I haven't shot any bullets except for sabots and PB's. I have about a hundred bullets I wanna try but don't have themoney for them. That's why I decide to just stick with my XTP's. I've tried them and know they work and are cheaply priced. I wanna test real blackpowder but don't have the money for that either. The gun guy told my Dad that stainless is the way to go with black powder guns. I certainly favored the stainless steel whenI had the Winchester Apex. I would probably get it if I could. I'm perfectly fine with black though. I don't think the camo stockis worth the extra cash--I just buy blue. I think the camo looks cool but isn't practical--it's just a way to get more money. Buy yourself some Pyrodex, TC Shockwaves or XTP's in 240 or 300 grain, and Winchester Triple Seven or CCI 209 primers. Start with 90 grains Pyrodex and work your way up. See what shoots best in your gun. You can't go wrong with that stuff. It's flawless. My favorite thing to shoot out of mine until further notice is the 300 grain XTP, 110 grains loose Pyrodex, and Triple Seven primers. It will work great on deer as well--I tested it. Sight it in 2 or 3 inches high at 50 yards and it'll impact about right on at 100 yards. I use open sights exclusively myself. I think the pellets are a great concept but won't use them because of the price. Triple Seven powder should perform great as well as the Pyrodex. Your scope should be great. Make sure and watch your head when you shoot. The scope will wallop you right on your forehead if you're not careful. That's one of the reasons I don't use them. You made an excellent choice and won't be disappointed. Best of luck to you. A little extra advice. DO swab quite often. I learned the hard way what a difference constant swabbing can make. Muzzleloading's simple and quite easy if you do things right and take it slow. |

Are the Omega synthetic having cracking problems like the Bpi stocks?

ORIGINAL: outdoorslover A little extra advice. DO swab quite often. I learned the hard way what a difference constant swabbing can make. Muzzleloading's simple and quite easy if you do things right and take it slow. Bingo--yes---amen! If you look here, page 37 of 64: http://www.tcarms.com/assets/manuals/current/Omega_Muzzleloader_Manual.pdf you will find the TC recommended procedure for Sabot bullets in an Omega. I don't think they put this statement in the manual just for the heck of it. Most ML hunters learn from others, and if you learned the wrong thing with regard to shooting and cleaningfrom your hunting buddies, it will produce an inaccurate rifle. So I 2ndoutdoorslover recommendation, but take it one step further, swab between every shot, it can be bore butter (2x) which is what I do, or alcohol swab (2x), or windshield washer fluid followed by a dry patchwhatever---now this will blow you mind---even in the field. So you really have a single shot rifle, forget the speed loaders, those are for folks that miss a lot (:->, just kidding they are convenient loaders), therefore need the speed. Now if your finishing off an animal, sure jam one down and finish it off. Don't relaod, swab the barrel right away and you will be amazed at the amount of fouling that just 2 patches can remove. Makes it so so much easier to load and do consistent shooting. Chap Gleason VA |
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
I had a cheap black powder rifle about 10 yrs ago, so I remember a little bit about them. I wasn't aware that you needed to swap between each shot. I do remember that they need a little more care than a regular centerfire rifle. I should get the gun the weekend of the Feb. 17th. By then I will probably have what I need to go out and shoot it.
outdoorlover... I was wondering about setting the scope, so you saved me asking another question. Thanks for the tips on bullets and powder, also. The pellets would be nice but I agree they are a little on the expensive side. My brother has a bp and he told me the same thing about the pellets. Wish they were cheaper. What about Sabots? Any favorites. |
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
After looking at the Cabela's catalog, I think that the sabots and bullets come together. Some one correct me if I am wrong.

I like the sabots that come on the TC's. They load fine in my gun. I always use the ones that comeon thebullets.

RE: Looking for a BP around $250
ORIGINAL: outdoorslover I like the sabots that come on the TC's. They load fine in my gun. I always use the ones that comeon thebullets. 1) swab between shots even in field 2) get a sabot that loads easy. I now do both of these things and my accuracy and confidence have improved. I too have a goal of shooting 2" groups. I think load, bullet, rifle bedding and solid rest all affect accuracy very very much. Of all those I believe bullet performance is number 1, 'cause if it won't kill quickly, then it is worthless. I like the term that I learned here on the forum "boom flop", that is what I am shooting for, as I know you are. Chap Gleason Va |

I will probably get some TC 300 grain xtp to start with. Then go from there. If they don't shot good, I will get something else. I may be back on here in a month looking for more ideas. You guys have been a lot of help. Thanks for everything.

I guarantee they will. I haven't encountered a gun they don't shoot well in but you never know. You made the right choice in your setup. I hope you're as satisfied asI am. Please do keep us informed when you get it and let us know what happens with it, how it shoots, etc. I'm excited to hear. Glad to help anytime. |
RE: Looking for a BP around $250
I finally got to shoot my new rifle today. I thought I was using 90 grains of pyrodex but it was 95. I shot a few times at 95 then moved to 105. I was using 777 primers and TC 240 grain cheap shot sabots. It was windy and I was shooting at 50 yards. The best group I could get was about 3". All 3 were on a vertical line. Not sure if it is the bullets or me. Probably me, it was my last group and I was getting a little tired. Reading all the adice on this forum made everything go off smooth. I wasn't sure about the best way to clean after I was finished. I used my bore cleaner and then some bore butter. I figured I would clean it good before I shoot it. I hope I did the right thing. I did take out the breech plug and clean the threads good. Any thing I missed? Will the 300 grain xtp bullets shoot any better than the cheap shots? Thanks to everyone for all their help.
