ORIGINAL: frontier gander a scope??[:'(] Just when i found myself getting excited and groud of you for you getting better groups, u go and stomp on my heart.[:'(][:'(] A scope is great for really telling one how welland just where one is pointing and how well the load is shooting. This isn't so evident with open sights and is a little harder separate load uncertainty from pointing uncertainty. Pull out one of your scoped rifles and rest the cross on a 1" dot at 100 yards while it is on 9 power. Try the same with the open sights. The scope will sure enough tell you how much your POA moves while sighting. This is never evident when aiming open sights. |

It's just for fun. I wouldn't hunt with it and I'll still use sights 90% of the time.

RE: Good-bad-adequate
Pretty much the same deal as most eveyone here. I have only trieda dozen different bullets and or wts. to work up my loads. 80-120 grains have been the range but usually never over 110 grs. Best current load, 110 grains w/ either a 245 or 250 gr hornady XTP, SST or powerbelt.
When I'm shooting good w/ a 3-9 or my 2.5-8 power scopesI can touch bullets w/ both Omega's @ 100 meters. Shooting soft ball groups isn't acceptable on top of a front bench rest @ a the range. I then work harder to find the right combo. I tend to shoot better after the first 10 shots on targets. I have learned after taking deer while hunting to take the first killing shot and I never mess around. When I shoulder the rifle I am pulling the trigger w/in a second. Longest kill is 130 yrds w/a BPinline rifle against the trunk and have shot many off hand 40-50 yrds on one knee oragainst alog small tree, etc. I haven't shot iron sights in yrs not even w/ the Hawken. I used a 2x even then. I do plan to try that new modified open peep one of the guys mentioned here or try the tape w/ a hole on my glasses, so I don't have a real load anymore. I used to shoot 1: 48 twist, 50 grs of BP @ 75 yrds w/ fist sized groups. I doubt I can do that now. When I get the new used LH HawkenI will try again... since it is a slow twist. SHills |

SHills http://rmcsports.com/rmcsports_cfmfiles/product.cfm?msection=1036 Also can you give me a URL to the Thread with the "tape w/ a hole on my glasses." I find the rear fibre optic sights blurry, in fact I see 4 green dots instead of two. Wearing reading glasses to see the rear sight when hunting is not an option for me. Here is a picture of the V-Peep which I am going to try. Will let folks know if it works, I am going to the Easter Outdoors show in Harrisburg on Friday of this week. Chap Gleason ![]() |

Chap,
Yes that is the one. Some one here told me about it andI think its a great idea! Cayugad told me about the black tape. I have two little pieces of very thin brass that looks like a loli pop with a tiny hole drilled in it. You tape the flat stick to your glasses and bend the loi part in front of your glasses. It should bring everything in to sharp focus, BUT that open peep looks like you won't loose light so I would have to try it! Let us know, SHills |

RE: Good-bad-adequate
Has anyone ever used a Lyman Front Sight with a + type insert. In addition have a rear Lyman SMET peep. I wonder if this would function like an open sight not magnification scope... I see Midway has then for sale. I have often thought in places like Wisconsin where scope magnification is illegal, if this would not make a different kind of aiming system. Although I question their ability in low light. http://www.midwayusa.com/mediasvr.dll/image?saleitemid=817066 |
RE: Good-bad-adequate
Cayugad, that is the exact setup I am going to try this spring. I have the Lyman peep mounted. I got the Lyman front sight from Shenandoah on DWB's. It didn't come with the + insert, but I am going to order the insert soon.
