.54 great plains w/ conicals
A friend of mine has a .54 lymanGP with 1:60 twist he wants to shoot conicals for deer and elk this year what is a good to start with?
In Oregon no plastic (sabot or power belts). Thanks |
RE: .54 great plains w/ conicals
I would think 230 grain RB should do the trick in 54 cal. and 100 grains of powder would say no need for a conical bullet.I would think the conical that comes to mind is a buffalo PA conical

Have him try the Buffalo Balletts. They shot good in my GPR. Better than a patched ball in fact.

RE: .54 great plains w/ conicals
I did a llot of shooting the Great Plains and aconical, it will take a max power charge and a light bullet, actually the lightest that PR bullets had (430gr ifI remember right). acheived 1.5" at a 100 yrds. but I agree the round ball should be fine.

The roundball will be fine. For conicals thatmight work in it, try these:

RE: .54 great plains w/ conicals
I have a Lyman in 54 Cal. The only thing other than the roundball I've tried is the Buffalo Ballet. I couldn't any sort of groups with them at all. If you find anything that groups fairly tight let us know.
