XTP bullets quick look
 

Here is my sons first deer. It was on opening day of general gun on his birthday. Taken w/ 80 grains of Black powder, 45 cal 240 grain XTP@ 17 paces from a small oak tree 6 feet off the ground.
Bullet went in just right of the shoulder socket and disentegrated a rib. WhenI skinned the deer the bullet was between the skin and the outer meat and had skidded downalmost to the hip.After scrubbing the bullet w/ a tooth brush the lead bullet seperated fromthejacket in my hand.
I have it around the house somewhere. I believe my son has in a safe place in a treasure box.

I have taken two other deer w/ that same combo w/ two rifles and the XTP performed great.
After hearing what others have said I will try some gold dots too.
I do have a XTP I found and will post later.

That looks like one happy man there. Be sure and tell your sone, congratulations on the nice deer. That XTP must have really done some damage during all its travels...

Love to see a grin like that on a kids face. Congrats to the young man. I hope that's just the first buck of many to come.

Makes me think of something I've read, sorry can't recall the author, but it said that 'hunting and fishing are the only true sports, everything else is a game or competition'. Ask this young man if he remembers the first baseball he ever threw or the first basket he ever made and I'll bet he won't, but a dozen years from now ask him if he remembers the first deer he got and he'll likely tell you 'like it was yesterday!'.

There has been a lot of deer taken with an XTP... but I would like to show you a problem that has always concerned me about Hornady bullets... even their interlocks...

the lead can separated from the copper... I am not saying it does it all the time but it does it enough to cause me some concern.

This is a picture of 45 cal 300 grain hornadys shot into a saturated clay water bar (dirt bank) @ 100 yards. They were powerd by 100 grains of T7-2f. The Speers were put through the same punishment...

All the Speers stayed together4 of the seven Hornadys stripped the lead from the copper...

Notice the one on the left did not even get a good start on expansion before it stripped....

Shooting a round into water saturated dirt is nothing like shooting animal but it does give some indication of toughness of a bullet... The only other bullet I have tried this with and have it succed were Nosler Partitions....

Huge amen, wow. Not may young men would start out with a Muzzie, shoot it well and get a buck. Congratulations to your son, and congratulations on your leadership in making him comfortable with the ML so he could bag his first deer on his birthday.I know your very proud of him. Chap Gleason

i wonder if powder and velocity have something to do with the xtp-s shedding its lead. arent those bullets designed for pistol calibers? i know there a favorite of bear handgun hunters thats how i learned about them. maybe they dont like to fly fast.
