1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
I finally got to go hunting yesterday. One of my hunting buddies and I went deer hunting at my hunting club yesterday. We decided to hunt from late morning (10:30) till dark. We planned to hunt an area on my club that hasn't had a lot of pressure this year. Some other members were hunting an adjacent area near the area we wanted to hunt. We went in late, so I didn't want to mess them up by driving by their area to get to ours. We tried a different area in my club for a couple of hours, but nothing was moving. We came back out to see if the other guys had left their area. They had left, so we signed into the area we originally wanted to hunt. We made our move and got settled in around 2:00PM. No deer to be found. Nothing moving but a bunch of squirrels and song birds.
Well things changed at around 4:30. About 15 hogs came down from behind me and I popped one of them!!! I got my first hog and it was with my muzzle loader!!! :D:D:D I shot it with my Knight Bighorn with a 300gr Barnes Expander, 85gr of 777 ffg and a Winchester W209 primer. Man, those Expanders are awesome bullets. It didn't even make it fifteen yards from where I shot it. Clean through at about 35 yards. Not a real big hog. Somewhere around 90 pounds. Good eating size!!! I had as big a smile on my face as when I killed my 11 pointer about five years ago. After I shot my hog the rest of the hogs tore out staight for my buddy. We carry radios so we can communicate if necessary. I called him on the radio and told him they were headed his way!!! He called me back and told me that the came right by him but they were moving so fast that he couldn't get a shot. This was a really cool hunt. I have been wanting to kill a hog for a long tiime and the fact that I got with a muzzleloaderwas icing on the cake. I'm ecstatic!!:D:D I was going to download a couple of pics, but I can't find the computor cable to my digital camera. I will download them when I find it. |

Congratulations! I'd be estatic too. I was hoping to see a hog when I hunted in Oklahoma last weekend. Don't eat it all at once!

Way to go there Yakfisher. Those Bighorns are a great rifle. My little Wolverine loves the same load. A Barnes 300 grain Expander and 85 grains of Triple Se7en 2f. Deadly accurate.
Someday I want to hunt hog with my muzzleloader. I just hope it is the near future... Again, Congratulations. Do you smoke the bacon? |

Yakfisher,
Congrats, Post a pic when you can! SHills |
RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
Thanks guys. Cayugad, the wife and I were just talking about smoking some of the meat in my smoker. Will let you know if we do and how it turns out.

yakfisher, way to go. Trust me smoked hog is absolutely mouth watering. I take an injector with a ham flavored marmalade and poke around to fill whatever piece you want to smoke from ribs to ham. I smoke it for about 8 hours with lots of smoke and it's the best. Once you eat one you will be after them year after year like myself when I go to Texas and hunt them at night, what a blast. Congrats. I just may smoke some tomorrow.:)

RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
now you guys are making me hungry.. That really sounds good...

RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
Me too. My neighbor has a smoker and there seems to be an increase in my apetite when he has that darned thing going. I usually stop over to discuss the weather late in the process. He also makes his own beer. :)
Those Barnes Expanders sure are a great bullet. At close range high impact velocities, they may lose a petal or two. Doesn't seem to affect penetration or the wound channel. Never used anything more lethal. |
RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
Congrats on the boar. I got one in the spring and its already gone must be time to go again. Lee

RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
Congrats on your boar. Seems like those Barnes Expanders are the bullet for this situation. Happy New Year.

I haven't gotten it back from the processor yet. My buddy got a hog a while back and made some barbeque out of one of the shoulders a couple of days ago. It was delicious!! I will letyou know how mine turns out. The wife and I make some mean barbeque. Man, I just ate and I'm starting to get hungry again.

BBQ is fine but just try smoking it a bit, I'll never BBQ wild hog as long as I have my smoker:)

RE: 1st Hog was a MuzzleLoader Hog
Bow season ends here on the 15th and I plan on getting back out with the muzzle loader to hunt some hog here on Ft Leonard Wood. They are in season by any means all year long. I am a meat smoking man myself. My fav pieces of meat to smoke are pork shoulders- Picnic and Boston Butt. I can't wait to throw down with a wild one rubbed with my home made pork rub on the smoker for about 12 hours at 220-240. Pull those babies apart and put them on a bun with pickles and BBQ sauce.....I am hungry and thirsty now.
I may have to lower the temps a bit on the wild one though, I bet they are much more lean than the store bought meat. |

Gotbuck
I just noticed you are in MO too. Only about 130 miles from here. We should get together to hunt some hog, drink a few beers, and smoke some hog meat. |
