New Omega Changes!

New to this forum. Glad I found it as there are very few good spots for smoke polers to find out info from...

I just purchased a new TC Omega 8926 (laminated NON thumb hole stock) except TC put the fluted barrel from a laminated 8913 thumbhole barrel on it for me. There are some real changes from my 2002 8924 SS/blk Syn stock. Theweird one is the hole they drilled between the breech plug and the back of the barrel on the very bottom. Apparently there is enough blowback from the primers and or powder that it takes the fowling that strikes the flat plate thatis partof the sealed swing breechthatflares up and hits the bottom of my new Leupold. Manthat torques my a$$. I liked the sealed breech and I only use 110 grains of 777. It also strikes the inside the stock on both sides even w/ the flat plate also.
The are many other changes and not sure why but this one is ugly. I just shot yesterday and I will be calling the factory next week. I want then to tap the hole or I will and put screw in its place.
My older rifle's breech plug has a much smaller hole that you could not get a pipe cleaner in and wonder if the mag loads madeTC drill that hole for safety. The back of the barrel has a groove around the outer dia. but is covered by the black sealed breech block. The firing pin has a threaded spanner screw w/ a hole in the center on the hammer side for the exposed pin.All non issues except for the hole in the bottom of the barrel.

Thereare no updated data sheets w/ the rifle, just the standard owners manual.

Thanks, SHills

Any thoughts or have any of youheard ofthis problem?

RE: New Omega Changes!

If your interested here are some pictures of the changes I have seen from the older welded falling breech block assembly.
I also made a nice change to my original XS powrod rod. I did it w/ a file in a little harbor freight drill press that I turned on its side on the work bench. I did shorten it slightly so it fits flush. The new TC power rod defeats the purpose of the original rod. The old roddeleted theextra step of having touse the flat side of the ball starter to press the load to the final pressure. I just did this last wk end after it fell out of the rifle the second time. Tightneing the set screw didn't last. The second time it
cost me real nice buck. I was hunting from the top of a deep ravine on a very windy day and @ 1530 a buck moved out along a nice little side trail. My shooting lane had a numerous hemlockbranchs and appaently one deflected my bullet and I missed. Unfornatually the rod slid out from the rifle about 3-4 feet down the hill. It was so windy the smoke cleared instantly and the deer had no idea where the shot came from and I saw it all in slow mo.. I had the powder dropped and the bullet in the QLA ready to push home while looking down for the rod and asthe deer slowly traversed the ravine.

I have heard of this "hole" under the BP at the bottom of the barrel but this is the first time I have actually seen one. Like you my '94 Omega does not have such and animal. Yet when I first heard about it I thought it might be a good ideal. I thought it might push the soot from the primer out the bottom instead of up on my scope - but it doesn't sound like that is the case... Most all of thebolt action rifles have this pressure escape hole drilled in the recieveras a safety measure.

I just made the switch to the 25 ACP to get rid of the soot/blowback problems... It is as clean as a whistle now... What really gets me is all these guys that have purchased the new CVA Apex and get noe of this blowback at all...

Thanx for the pics...

RE: New Omega Changes!

Sabotloader,
My only beef is the system is supposed to be a sealed breech which now it is not...and now it is hurting my scope...
If I had know of this I would have passed. My older rifle was fine and shot great.... I just gave it to my new son in law.
Like I said in the other post I will call TC next week for an answer. This is not right especially when we are suppossed to move ahead not backwards.
Thanks, SHills

RE: New Omega Changes!

Shills, could you reexplain what you did to the rod ?
Mine tends to slip out after each shot as well.

thanks

RE: New Omega Changes!

Sideways,
I bought one of those little Harbor Freight drill presses a few yrs ago and the small table vise. Firstthing I did was to take my original Omegarugged rod and put the XS rod side by sideon the work bench. Then took a triangle jewelers file and scribbed a mark on the original brass tip on the XS Rod to get the correct length. Mine was about a 1/4 inch past the barrel on my Omega. Unscrewed the brass tip and chucked it up in the drill press in the vertical position. I layed a 32 tooth hack saw blade across the jaws of the vise and lowered the drill press till the mark lined up with the filed reference mark. The press speed was 650 rpm, the lowest setting avail on this little 1/3 hp motor. Cut off the tip by holding in place and putting pressure on the part. Crude but easy! Now the hole in the middle is too small to accept a ballistic tip like the Hornady SST ML. Now take three different drill bits and make the hole just large enough to take the dia of the SST's red tip. DO NOT DRILL too deep and account for a very slight counter sink on the front to debur. If you do drill too deep there will not be enough wall thickness on the brass left to make your taper for the clip inside the Omega's front lug. I rescribed the high spot on the rugged rod to match on the XS rodand took electrial tape and made a wrap for a reference. Take the drill press and lay on its side and use some blocks of wood to level. Chuck up the brass tip and take a bastard file and start the main hard short taper and finish with the little jewlers file. Then make the longer taper toward the front. I finished off the very front last and used three differnt files. Two were very small jewerlers style. Then took 150 grit wood sand paper, just what was laying around and did the finish work. Be very careful of the relationship between the hole drilled, depth and the taper made with the file so you don't make the wall thickness too thin. Took me a 1/2 hr free hand. If you screw up I will bet the TC part # 9413 thread adapter could be turned into one too. The wholeprocess was really easy. Just have the SST on hand to fit check and the rugged rod for quick checks every few minutes and you will be fine...
Hope this explaination is understandable. Easier to show than write.

If you are wondering what that string is below the barrel it is a wind indicator thread that is taped on. Better than wind powder and helped me kill a few nice deer.

HoleHopper,
I will call TC about that hole the 27th but they may be off for the week. I get in touch ASAP and let you know. I would hold off shooting that rifle for sure till Iget a solid answer.

RE: New Omega Changes!

Sabotloader,
After closer examination the hole in the bottom does let the gases out but I now think the seal around the breech w/ that groove is to blame as the powder on the scopoe was very pin point in source. After closer inspection the black breech doesn't seal like the older Omegas and allows leakage up.
I'll know more after i talk to the factory tomorrow..

Is this the new 1/2 turn breech plug? If it is might check this post out...

http://modernmuzzleloader.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=5488

RKS1949 also post here you might be able to PM here...

I really do not get much actual blow-back from mine (old Omega) - I use tape and it is sealed but I do get a heck of a lot of soot from the primer and I am using low yield Remington 209-4's. I am also quite sure my block is pushing up against the primer in the breech plug.... I kinda wish I had one of those new Apex's around I would like to check them out since thay get none of this....
