Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
I bought all new stuff this year. I got the triple 7 50/50 powder, 295 powerbelt bullets and the winchester triple7 209 primers for muzzleloaders. I was getting hang fires. About the first 6 shots before I switched to the 209 for shotshell hung. After I switched to the other primer I didn't have any more problems.
Anyone else have this problem? |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers

Kinda interesting... the primers were going off OK - correct? but it took awhile to ignite the pellets - correct? If all of this is correct is there any possibilitiy that the breech plug flash channel was fowled? Do you swab between shots? What with? Do you use grease on the BP? Just asking questions not condemming anything... but i would like to know why.... |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
If he was swabbing with a heavy liquid and not drying the barrel in the breech plug area, maybe with the reduced flash that these primers have, it was causing the hangfire. Then once he goes to a hotter primer, the extra flash counter acted all of that.. good point Sabot loader.

Interesting, I haven't had that problem with the 777 primers. They've worked like a charm for me so far.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
Have used them and had no problems . Also use veriflame 209 adapters with not problems even at low temps .

Also... I have NOT had any trouble with the Triple Se7en 209's. In fact they are by far the best Ive shot to date. No Crud ring now! yippie. I just counted... 78 shots taken with the new primers and not any hangfires or misfires.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
Hey Guys,
I am using a CVA Wolf. The barrel was swabbed dry and I shot off 3 primers before loading. The breech plug was cleaned thoroughly. The cap was definitely firing and a brief delay before the powder went off. Kind like them old days with percussion caps. I shot 5-6 shots with the same results, so I don’t think it was from a “wet” barrel. I dry brush between shots, no cleaning solution or oil. I can’t figure it out and most people I tell just raise and eyebrow like I’m on drugs or something. It certainly should not be happening. |

I had the same problem with the rem primers. Is ws not the primer. I was running a wet patch with #13 and was wetting it to much. Took out the breech plug and found damp powder residue inside. Full power 209was able to still ignite the powder.

I do not think that a lot of people realize there is an internal cavity in the more modern breech plugs - It sounds like you have found it.... |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
My son had this same problem when he tried to site-in his Wolf he was using pellets ( T7 50 gr. ) that were leftover from last season. We switched over to new powder (T7 loose )and that cured that problem. We guess that the powder must have gone bad ,drew moisture or something.

I had the same problem with the same gun. I switched to cci 209 primers and no more problems.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
I'm glad some other have experienced the same problem. I wish I had had time to experiment with a few different combinations of stuff, but I did not...
It is a fun gun to shoot! |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
Pellets and lite primers just do not work,They are fine for powder

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
Look, I have said this many times before. The rifles are made to shoot a standard W209 primer. If they were made to shoot a special primer shoot that.
What the hell try shooting standard W209 primers out of the thing. They cost only a couple bucks a box at a store that sells reloading supplies. I have only shot them out of my Encore well for close to 10 years. |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
All that i ever used until this year were plain old Winchester 209 shot shell primers.Never had a misfire withthese primers.Used Pyrodexpowder and pellets, Clean Shot powder and pellets and some Black Powder. This year i bought some of the spiffy 209 M/L primers at three times the cost of the old 209s because they were all that was available in a hurry. Luckily i have not usedany pellets with these primers. When these "lite" primers are gone i will go back to Winchester 209s.

A friend had the same problem.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
Between my father and I.. we've shot over 100 of the new Winchester 777 primers.. and haven't had a single hang fire.
Could be a number of things... You said that you fired 3 off before ever loading the gun... the primers prolly fouled the hole in the breech plug. Why fire off 3? Did you not run enough patches to clean the barrel? Maybe take a hat pin and make sure the hole in the breech plug is clear of any excess fouling. You should not need to fire off multiple primers to "dry" the breech. These are primers.. not caps. Sounds like you might want to change your shooting regiment... I'm guessing 99% user error... |
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
i think the new t7 primers are a joke supposed to be cleaner only thing i see is they cost 3 times as much as reguler primers does
|
RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
I only use T7 primers and have never experianced any hang fires. It feels like they are more weather tight or moisture proof to me than any other I have used. Im sure that that is just because they look a little different.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
I've been experiencing that with remington kleenbore primers with pyrodex rs as the main charge. I can hear the primer go off and then the charge. I switched to CCI primers and was back in action. I also noticed the "kleenbore" primers gave me a horrible amount of blowback and fouling. From now on im sticking with all the older "original" stuff. This new and better stuff they come out with each year is alla scam that takes care of one problem and then leaves you with another.

RE: Hang fire with new Triple 7 primers
I just tried those primers out and haven't had a single problem in 50 shots.I was using loose powder of course. They go off readily at the drop of a hammer.
