Remington 700 ML Breech Plugs --- What the heck!

I cant seem to get the nipple and breech plug apart ( I know it sounds like a personal problem ). It's like they are welded together. This is the second time this has happened. The first time this happened I thought maybe I tightened the nipple down to hard so I bought a new breech and nipple. I hand tightened the nipple to the breech and the same thing happened.

It is very difficult to clean the breech and nipple as one unit. Anyone else having similar problems?

Did you grease the threads before assembling it? The reason I ask is because with my White if I don't grease the threads they lock up and can be a pain to get them apart after shooting it. Not that this will help for now tho.

White lithium grease works well. You can buy it at the hardware store.

Last recourse would probably be to put the breech plug assembly in a vice and then apply heat to the plug (sparingly) with a torch while trying to turn the nipple out. Are you shooting Triple7 by any chance?

I have had this happen twice before on my 700MLS. Both times I was running it dry(no grease, teflon, etc in the brech/nipple threads) and shooting a lot at the range. What I did is used a small diameter hex wrench on the breech, then the nipple/breech tool on the nipple. Place the nipple/breech tool in a bench vise and unscrew the breech plug with the heck wrench. (has to be a thin diameter wrench not the regular shop style)

I now use grease or pink teflon tape in all shooting apps and remove the breech and nipple while still warm after a long practice session. If used in the field I do this as soon as I return home...not suggested to fool around with it in the field pretty hard to find stuff in the grass!

Underclock, why do you ask about triple 7, is this a known thing or problem? (i forgot to ask)

Triple7 creates a fouling that is quite hard, it resembles cement. Some rifles get a lot, some almost none. My first outings with Triple7 taught me to find something better for the plugs so I wound up using the pink tape with just a touch of grease on the forward thread area.

I think we started hearing a LOT more about stuck breech plugs and nipples after T7 hit the market.

Thank guys - as always - for the input. Underclocked, I didn't use Triple7. I used bore butter to grease the nipple. Apparently it didn't work real well. I'm going to try the heat option - if that doesn't work I'm going to buy another breech plug and another nipple. Don't get me wrong I love this gun but man these things can get expensive maintaining them. So far I've bought 3 new nipples, 2 breech plugs, a new ram rod (it broke at the connection 2 days after I bought the gun) and a new bolt assembly (it locked up on me even though I clean it religiously after every use).

Buck...what the heck is right. I have had the same breech/nipple plug in my 700 for 5 years now. How tight are screwing them in? I use the plumber trick, hand tight. If you are doing hand tight...lay off the wheatie's....LOL. Are you leaving it dirty for an extended period of time?

How did your ramrod break? Did you use it with the little extension piece that came with the ML? (trianglar piece is for cleaning and bullet pulling only) I only use the actual ramrod for loading purposes. I know it is a little tough on the hand, but a glove, cloth or shirt sleeve is all you'll need...plus when in the field you can't use that piece anyway... I like to make my practice session as much like the hunting would be. Just a thought!

Are you taking the whole assembly apart for cleaning(which should be done)? (meaning unscrewing it, if so make sure to grease the spring and threads with lith, if and when you remove) Was the bolt covered under warranty? Seems to me it should have been since you just got the gun (unless used).

Good Luck and hope you got her apart.
