Floating barrel
 

After reading that post about the tc omega synthetic stock having issues with the floating and rubbing ruining some accuracy i tryed the paper test on my winchester x-150 and could only get about 1 inch of paper between the barrel and stock before it stopped, i took the barrel off and checked it out and and found the bright silver rubbings and so i took my rifle apartand after an hour " or so it felt" i took off all the "paint" that was on the sides of the stock and redid the paper test. Worked like a charm! Its a camo stock and when they dip it, all that paint builds up along the sides and there for doesnt allow the floating barrel to do its job. All i had to do was take the paint down to the black of the stock and it solved the problem. I even took out my brothers .270 to see how his gunsmith did it and mines doing just the exact as his rifle. I left it a little tighter where my barrel slowly starts to taper but with some drag where the paper gets tight. Now i just have to buy some bullets and shoot the rifle and see if the groups have tightened up! So if you guys have a camo stock, try taking that paint off in there and mount your barrel back on.

I just came back from an unsuccessful elk hunt. I had a decent shot and could not understand how I could have missed. I shot the Omega at the hunting altitude and temperature and found the impact point at 50 yards a full foot higher than what I had sighted in at lower altitude and higher temperature. I also found the stock is still touching the barrel in several places depending on how much torque is put on the screws and which one is tightened first. I think I am going to try to figure out a way to pillar bed the synthetic stock. I am considering threading a piece of aluminum (or steel) and screwing it into the stock mounting hole area after drilling and tapping the holes. Then drill the center of the metal to accept the mounting screws. Then bedding the whole thing with bedding compound and sanding clearance for the barrel forward of the front mounting lug. I cannot get the synthetic stock to hold zero the way it is. I also will not sight in so far from the altitude and temperature of the hunting area next year if I am lucky enough to get drawn again. Maybe just buy a laminated stock and be done with it.
