Bore butter

I was at the range the other day practicing hunting scenario type shots. I would shoot, then load and shoot, then clean. I was having a difficult time getting my second loads down. I'm looking at getting a t-handle to help this. I was thinking, if i put a little bore butter around the plastic that holds the sabot, would this help slide in easier? Would it affect my ballistics or where I hit at all? It was a pretty cool feeling shooting a muzzleloader for the first time. Thanks for the help.

RE: Bore butter

I have read of others putting just a light smear of bore butter on sabots to help them slide down the barrel. Another choice might be to get some Harvester Crushed Rib or MMP HP-24 sabots or some of the super glide. Being just a little thinner then normal sabots, they would help you in loading the second shot.

Get a t-handle or palm-saver for your ramrod-end
Get a bore brush& large patches (2-1/2 or 3")
Swab after every 2nd shot
Buy thinner sabots like these below. If your bullets are .452, I usually try the Crush Ribs first. If they are .451, then I'll try the regular Harvesters first.

RE: Bore butter

I have been MLH now for six years... I recommend you try American Pioneer Powder... you will be amazed. I can shoot 16 times in a row and still seat the bullet completely. One tip with using it... be sure you have pretty much a lubricant free barrel with the first shot... What I do is run a bore snake thru the barrel before loading the first time. I also only utilize BlueWonder gun cleaners... nothing patrolium based touches the inside of my barrel. This cuts the fowling down dramatically.

RE: Bore butter

I apply a little Bore Butter around the sabot base. It helps in softening the deposits for the second shot.
