Well I build my own and I get the best trajectory with a 54 with a extremly tight greased patch.
I have built a number of 58's and cayuqad is pretty much correct in what he says; what I would add to that is that a 35 or 36 inch barrel adds quite a bit to the trajectory if you use half the ball weight in powder as I like to and that a 1-66 or 1-80 twist is very good for a 54 PRB but a 1-100 is much more like it for 58 or 62; also remember the recoil when you bring the 58 up to the same trajectory as the 54 will be noticable. Triple Se7en, that is why I bought the 1:66 with the custom FRO rifle no QLA. Of course my origional Renegade doesn't have it. The QLA is fine with conicals and sabots but I feel weird trying to put a roundball in one. How is one suppose to cut the patch if the whole thing slides out of view?

I would look for a vintage Renegade in good shape if I was the origional poster. You also will get the advantage of a better stock.

This shows my new FRO above the very early Renegade. Can you see what I mean about the the quality of the wood? The old Renegade I must elaborate is a great shooter.

I was shooting my friends newT/C Hawkins that I am sure has the QLA. After I pushed the roundball down into the QLA I simply cut the patch clean off at the muzzle. The patches are a little bigger then normal, but it did not seem to hurt his accuracy at all. With 100 grains of Pyrodex RS and patched roundball, that thing shot excellent.

If a cut patch is going to be hard to control, think of the tiny small pre cut patch. To me with a QLA that would be a nightmare.

Put me down as thirds on the Gm .58 bbl with the 1 in 70" twist. Mine is a caplock instead of a flintlock. That thing hits with authority with a roundball.
