scope recommendation
 

I am considering an inexpensive scope for my H&R sidekick. Any recommendations?

Most of my shots are in close (inside of 50 yards), but I do hunt a few spots where a typical shot is 75-100 yards. I would like to improve my accuracy at this distance.

You will want to check the scope for clearance on the mount rings and hammer. I have a huntsman with a scope that I had trouble getting clearance. I used the weaver #82 base with weaver high ring and didin't have hammer clearance on a 32mm lens scope. Also with only 2 ring grooves in the base the scope doesn't have much adjustment for eye relief position. The base from H&R would problably work better. I think it has more ring grooves than the standard weaver.

I second the Nikon Prostaff. Have had a four power Prostaff on my old CVA Staghorn for four years and over 400shots. This scope has held up for me when three other brands have failed on my shotgun andmuzzleloaders.

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 3 X 9 and a Nikon Prostaff 2 X 7. Both were bought on Ebay last year atasubstantial discount from their listed retail price. The Prostaff is the "lower" line scope and the Buckmaster is a step above it, but below the Monarch series in Nikon's rifle scope offerings.

This is my second season with theBuckmaster,which is mounted on an Omega 50 cal Z5.So far it has performed flawlessly. I think the Buckmaswter series is a great value. So far it has been completely waterproof and fog proof. The adjustments have been precise. The optics are excellent - bright and clear. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. I think that I paid about $120 (slightly used) for the scop on Ebay.

The Prostaff is, in my opinion, one of the top 2 or 3 scopes available for under $125.00 - $150.00. My dad has the 3 X 9 Prostaff on his Knight Revolution and really likes it. I put the 2 X 7 on a little Remington Model Seven in 7mm-08 that the kids shoot and it has worked well. The optics are amazingly bright for a scope in this price range. I have readfavorable comments frommany happy Prostaff owners on this and other discussion boards.

You can't go wrong with either one.

I have one of every scope that Triple Se7en mentioned in the above list except I have a Banner instead of the Legend. On that list I would recommend the Nikon Pro Staff, and Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn 1.5-4.5x32mm. While the Banner is only a $69.00 scope the clarity and eye relief is excellent. I have pounded a lot of rounds through the Black Diamond XR it is mounted on and it has never moved off dead center.

The only thing I dislike about the Sightron and the Millet is the length of the scope. I had to remove the rear sight in some cases because of the scope length. Also spend the extra money and get the Warne QD (Naxina T/C) rings. You can take the scope on and off for easy and through cleaning, use the open sights should the need arise, and it just plain makes a nice set up.

I am thinking now of getting a Nikon 1x20mm scope for my rifle since we are not allowed magnification scopes during muzzleloader season and again using the Warne QD rings.

I am going with Cayugad on this one. I just bought a Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn 3-9X40 from Midway a Couple of weeks ago. I am very impressed with the clarity of this scope for $69.00. They are out of the one I bought with the BDC. They had it on sale. But this one should do the trick.

Like the other guys said, you can't beat a Nikon. I have a Buckmasters and have shot guns with the Pro Staffs. True quality scope. But if you are going to go inexpensive, I would go with the Bushnell. The Banner blows away the Tasco's and BSA's.

I'll second everyonesadvice on the Bushnells. They have a very clear sight view, and arevery dependable scopes.;)
