What is barrel fluting for and what does it affect?

the BF is suposto do 3 things from my understanding. help cool the brral,reduce weight,and look differnt.
they started showing up more on coustom guns.
but the maine use is to reduce the weight. on custom guns i have sean they show up more on ultr-lights

One thing you guys missed is that fluting, if done properly, will result in a more rigid barrel (when comparing barrels of the same final WEIGHT).
