Need help with my Rem 700 again!
Hey folks,I got back home yesterday and NO I didn't have a good time with my ML. As previously posted I sighted in my Rem Ml at 2in high @ 50yds. One day after missing a deer @around 75yds I rechecked the rifle with my buddy. I found that my shot to be 6in off from where I had been previously been sighted in. I'm using 295gr powerbelts and 2-50gr Cleanshot pellets. Also, my buddy noticed that when shot a portion of the pellet would come flying out like some kind of roman candle! I switched over to loose cleanshot powder and would get in 2 decent shots then my third would hit God knows where. I also tried loose pyrodex and experienced similar results. I'm shooting a fixed 4x Tasco scope and checked for loose mounts etc. and can't find anything loose or out of the ordinary. I've got around 50 plus shots thru this rig and I'm about to pull my hair out! This rig has cost me 3 deer while at home in Mississippi but thankfully got to bag a nice 8pt and a couple of does for the freezer. I'm still wondering what to do with this rig (sell or trade for another)and wondering how to deal with this dilema. All of you have provided great help to me in the past and I hope you can help this old smokepoler out again. MANY THANKS!

RE: Need help with my Rem 700 again!
I've got a 54, and use 2-60gr pyodex pellets and Knight sabot and a 230 gr. XTP from Hornaday. Get a 2" group at 100yds with a peep sight. Just my $.02

RE: Need help with my Rem 700 again!
Shadowfox- I shoot a 700ml (50 cal.) musket cap-100 gr. loose rs pyrodex with a 295 copper powerbelt-3x9x40mm-tasco wide angle. I sighted mine in on 9 power at both 50 and 100yds. At 50 yds. I sighted at 2 in. high and at 100 yds. without any changes I was shooting 4 in. high-where I hunt my shot will never be greater than this so I brought my sight down so I was dead on at a 100yds. my eyes are so bad that if I tried to use a 4 power at 100yds. the whole target would be blurry to me and my group of shots would be horrible unless I was at 9 power. I shoot off a bench at the range and use sand bags. You mentioned you sighted in at 50 yds, where were you at a 100yds? This 700 barrel I have with the load I mentioned and this inexpensine Tasco will shoot 2 in. groups at a 100yds.-I do run a brush down the barrel about every 5 or 6 shots but thats all-I have shot a 20 round pack at the range without even running 1 patch down the bore- I think before I blame my PowerBelt or my 700 I would try a different scope on your gun-maby a friend could loan you one-see If you can get a 3x9 -let me know how you make out-your and my equipment is the same except for the scope!!

Does your next purchase involve smokeless powder?

RE: Need help with my Rem 700 again!
Shadowfox, I bought my 700 several years ago.
I shoot 2-50 gr. pyrodex pellets and a 300 gr. barnes x mz. hollowpoint with a musket cap. The gun shoots great, under 2 inches at 100 yards, and I think I will upgrade to the 209 primer conversion kit from Cabela's soon. I know each gun is different in what it likes but this works really well in my gun. I tried the powerbelts a few times in mine but it would not shoot them well at all. |
RE: Need help with my Rem 700 again!
FYI I use 100grains of 2f black powder and 300 grain Barnes MZ expanders. 1 inch groups at 100 yards with a bench rest. 4X Tasco silver antler scope. I hope you find the right combination for your 700.
