T/C OMEGA PROBLEMS

O.K.
My stepdad is gone this weekend and is to proud to ask advice. So here is his problem-- he is around 60 yrs. old and has been battling the dredded crud ring and having a hard time pushing down the 2nd or more bullets down a dirty barrel of his omega. He has tried all different kinds of powder and bullets with no resolve. Please do not ask me specifics on certain bullets or powders because I do not know. What I am asking for is help for him on what you guys have used to make the 2nd,3rd, and so on shots easier to load without swabbing the barrel in the field? All info would be greatly appreciated , He told me if he doesn't get it solved this year the OMEGA is going down the road !!!

RE: T/C OMEGA PROBLEMS

My omega is probably as bad as any. Mine refuses to allow a second shot with anything I have tried up until I found Black Mag'3 powder. It is expensive and difficult to find by the Omega loves it. I have loaded and shot four in a row without a swab. I can sometimes get American Pioneer to allow second and third shots but it is not a clean as BM3. I just got some Goex Pinnacle to try but the temperature is too hot to shoot yet so have not tried it. The Omega isa long barrel and Black Mag'3 works best in a long barrel. It lights off a little slower than powders like Tripple Seven but with the long barrel it actually gave me higher velocity that equal volume of T7 ffg.

Here are two solutions. The first link is forapplying toyour swabbing patches after every shot. Also, using a bore brush breaks-up the crud easier than a loading jag. A good secondary liquid for swabbing is Windex.

The 2nd link is for discarding the tough-loading plastic sabot he has - then using these instead.

RE: T/C OMEGA PROBLEMS

I found that when using the new Winchester 777 primers.. I could load 5 shots in a row w/ no issues seating the 250 Gr TC shockwave w/ theold black sabot... and this was w/ 120gr of the dreaded 777 2f powder. I was quite impressed. With the same load and the Remington Kleanbore primers... I could get a 2nd.. maybe a 3rd shot if I was lucky.

I went back to pyrodex in my Omega due to accuracy issues. Very little crud ring. Should allow for a second shot in the field without swabbing. The only reason you should need more than two quick shots in the field is if the indians are coming!

As far as shooting at the range, I always swab between each shot. Why would anyone NOT do this.

If you are shooting sabots, Black mag3 may work ok inhis Omega, but it did not work with conicals in my Omega. And I sure hoped it would because it is as clean as MLKeith says. APP shot very clean too, but again the accuracy sucked with conicals. Might be worth trying those 2.

And remember too, that what works in one Omega may not work in another one. My brother's Omega and mine shoot entirely differently.

I know several times I have shot at a deer with a muzzleloader and for some reason they just stand there and don't runaway if I miss, unlike when shooting at them with a rifle or shotgun. Thanks for the info. , I'll try to recommend it to him.

I doubt that you have shot a lot of elk. I have shot three that did not fall down and one that did. The one that dropped instantly was shot just behind the left eye. The others were double lung shot and they went from a short distance of 80 yards to a half mile before getting dropped with a second shot. The 80 yard one had a 50cal. hole directly through the heart and she walked the 80 yards. Since I hunt alone and a shot elk seems to want to go to the bottom of a canyon; I like the ability of a quick second shot. I saw a couple of bull elk drop instantly on being hit with a muzzleloader on one of the outdoor shows, and I sure would like to know what they were using as mine do not seem to be that frail. I usually get drawn for antlerless (cow) muzzleloader elk as that is the only chance to really get a draw with any regularity. I have been drawn four out of seven years. Maybe the cows are tougher than the bulls???

RE: T/C OMEGA PROBLEMS

There is something about the design of the Omega (likely breechplug design and/or the rifling cut) that makes it difficult to use Tripple Seven and at the same time makes it really perform with Black Mag'3. I have seen several Omega owners that have tried BM3 with the same great results. Other rifles (especially short barrel ones) seem to not do so well with the powder. Due to the relatively slow light off time the initial felt recoil is lower than the same velocity load of Tripple Seven which really socks me in the shoulder due to fast burn rate.
