Think I found my Co Elk load
 

Going to try to put in for a bull in the spring for Co. Planning on taking a wolverine for backup with open sights, but want to use my T/C hawken. I shot it again with 350gr maxihunters and 320gr maxiballs with 90gr of Goex ffg. I am getting good 2" groups at 50 yards with the hunters. My chono is having trouble. What kinda velocity do you think I am getting? I figure 1350fps? I have alot of experience with inlines, and sabots, but haven't chrono'd conicals from hawken. Should be plenty for elk I figure.

Maxiballs should take down any elk. It is a "ton" of power. No kidding. That is a very powerfull load.

I have a new Colorado elk load I'm playing with - spent the afternoon at the range with the new Remington Genesis. The new 338 gr. platinum Powerbelt, ahead of 130 grains of Jim Shockey Gold, shot consistently 2" (open peepsights) at 100 yards. In the cold rain on Friday, this load chrono'ed at 1891. My New Mexico load, a 300 Shockwave ahead of 130 grains of Pyrodex pellets, was going 1886 out of the Genesis on Friday. Not really giving up anything here to be Colorado legal.

Nonetheless, a medium weight lead conical going 1350 will be a formidable elk load at moderate range. Most folks limit themselves to 125 yards.

Just thinking maybe I should try great plains or buffalo ball too? You were saying on another thread that its a deer bullet for sure.To be straight with ya, I can't shoot open sighted worth a hoot. 75yards would be my max distance.

According to my Thompson Center manual, shooting 90 grains of Goex 2f and a 350 grain maxihunter or 370 maxiball will have a muzzlel velocity of 1465 f.p.s. and a muzzle energy of 1764 ft. lbs. I've never hunted elk with a muzzleloader but I would think that would have a lot of down range thump.. good luck with the elk.

According to my sources, the 348 gr. Powerbelt Aerotip is the most popular elk bullet out here. Locally, there are a bunch of folks who swear by the 385 gr. Buffalo bullet. One of the local gunshop owners has a cigar box full of expanded slugs that came from elk harvested with this bullet. I have used the 410 Hornady Great Plains with very good results - and will go back to it if the 338 gr. platinum powerbelts don't work out. Lots of choices . . . . .

That Buffalo 385 is just a better overall bullet than the Hornady (my opinion via internet reads). A tad-more accurate with that double-band engagment design. They also make one for the 50 that's heavier-yet.

Think I will tinker some more. Who knows, might not get drawn for a bull. supposed to go out this year, but I didn't get in in time, and my buddy drew an bull tag. So he sent his back. So maybe next year.

I'll let you know how the buff bullet does.

The 338 Platinum Powerbelt was designed for elk-sized game. Practice with the regulars - but use the Platinum for hunting.
