Did CVA make a .45 Hawken?
I picked up what appears to be a CVA kit gun of the Hawken (halfstock)design for $60 at a pawn-shop.
It has a 28" barrel, no patch box, double-set triggers and doesn't appear to have been fired. One barrel wedge and two thimbles... I checked old gun-digests from the 60s, 70s and 80s and couldn't find this gun. Wondering about the rate-of-twist as well. Any help highly appreciated! BP |
RE: Did CVA make a .45 Hawken?
No patch box indicates that it may possibly be a CVA Mountain Rifle. Is the brass dark or shaded-burnt blue?
Since your "signature" at the bottom of your posts shows you are familiar with the Kentucky rifle, then that's the only CVA model left (that I know of). The other (St. Louis Hawkens) came with brass & patch box. The Mountain Rifle of that era was 1-66" twist. Best way to find the right answer is emailing CVA at [email protected] Be sure to include the serial numbers in that email. Allow 7-10 days for an answer. I recently inquired about getting a Mountain Rifle barrel for a friend with a perfect stock assembly. It took about 8 days for a "No Remaining Barrels" answer. Needless to say... he was disappointed. |
Found it in an older "Dixie GW" cat.
It's the "Frontier" rifle, but no mention of the twist. Waiting to hear back from CVA on that.
Hoping for a conical twist since those maxi's make the .45 pretty respectable... pretty good hog poison out of the Kentucky rifle. Guess I'll find out soon enough. BP |

Is this it?
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=56226727 If you did a Google search for a few pages, you will find the twist. I think the ML dates back to around 1982. |
Yup, that looks like it!
Except for a coupla' minor changes, that's what I've got.
The sites on mine are a little more crude and mine doesn't state where it's made etc. but that looks like it! Thanx for the help, just waiting on CVA for more info, though I'll probably have it on the range this weekend. I'll find out pretty quick if it's a slug-gun or not. Gonna cast up some more TC maxi's tonight. HH! BP |
