Stainless vs. Blue; worth the extra $'s?
 

Opinions please on whether stainless is worth the extra $'s shooting modern powder (PYRODEX, etc.). Is corrosion still a big issue?

I have an Encore in stainless and love it. You still have to clean, clean, clean and clean it again. Now, my sidelock would look silly in stainless. Jim

Since I have had both, I will only buy Stainless if the option is available for a ML. Obviously inlines and such not the traditional side or flint lock type. I think the one advantage you can really tell how clean is clean with stainless, blued it is much tougher.

IMO, it is worth the extra.

I've shot BP out of my blued inline for the last 5 years, and there isn't a spec of rust on it anywhere. I'm pretty good about cleaning it thoroughly after every day of shooting.

Well, if you asked me 5 years ago, I would have said doesn't make an ounce of difference. Now, after hunter the briny salt water of the swamps on the eastern shore of MD, I would say go for the stainless. Two days of hunting in that salty air and water can take its toll on a gun. But then again, not too many people hunt this kind of terrain.

Depends on the SS you are talking about. 416 still contains plenty of carbon otherwise you couldn't machine the components economically. 17-4 stainless seems to hold up a lot better the rest will still rust if not taken care of it will just take a little longer. If I had a stainless rifle it would be teflon coated or plated with something if I were to hunt in Alaska or near the ocean. Better black powders being produced today and you'll have no problem with internal corrosion. Point is you have to be careful with both and wipe both down . I have had a stainless muzzleloader rust up rather nicely when hunting in wet..snowy conditions for more than a couple of days...I have also had stainless steel limb bolts on a Bow rust up during a hunt where it rained one day out of 7.

I have got 2 blued side locks and a stainless T/C Encore and love all of them it depends on the gun and how it looks one side lock is a Kentucky and it is browned I have a hawkins and it is blued then my T/C is stainless. Depends on what gun your wanting. Good luck and just remember Prasctice and Be SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
