Going Back to Pyrodex Pellets
After some initial testing with Jim Shockey Gold that produced some very good groups, I am having some issues. For some reason, the point of impact varies vertically with this powder. I originaly thought there was something wrong with the scope, but after a lot of range time and experimentation have determined that the gun will not hold zero from day-to-day and week-to-week with this powder. It moves up and down over about a 6" spread. Went back to the old Pyrodex pellet load that always shoots to the same spot. Anyone else experience wandering zero with the APP/Shockey Gold powders?

RE: Going Back to Pyrodex Pellets
I have wanted to try it but I live in an area where it is hard to find. Here's a review about American Pioneer Powder I found on "Modern Muzzleloader":
http://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1120&highlight=american+pionee r You might have to join to read this post. I have read AP can be inconsistent. I am using Pyrodex at the moment.A buddy of mine tells me Triple 7 is much cleaner. I'll probably give it a try when I run out. Good luck. Mike |
RE: Going Back to Pyrodex Pellets
I've had mixed luck shooting Pyrodex Pellets. The Black Diamond XR really likes them. The Knight Disc seems to like loose better only because it shoots better with stronger loads. I have yet to get some APP but I am going to get a pound of it next time to the city.
I do have some Black Mag 3 that I will be shooting this week if all goes well. I really want to test some of the rifles using it. Today was one of those real bad days on the range. Other then one bright point with a Lyman Flintlock .54 caliber and some Powerbelts 405 grain Aero Tips and 80 grains of Goex 2f. The Trade Rifle really shot the powerbelts excellent, but I was trying to get that Permetx Hand lube to shoot roundball in that rifle and could not get a group. But then I switched to moosemilk and still could not get a group. So it could have been the moon, stars, tide, what ever.. but I suspect it was just me having one of them days. [&o] |

I am not sure why on the other hand APP FFtears ragged holes in the same place dependably with my Omega. It also shoots pyrodex well;I just bought another pound of Gold FF to experiment with my Omega don't seem to like Pinnacle either. Lee |
RE: Going Back to Pyrodex Pellets
My son has always had good luck with them and so did I before finding T7. I always liked loose powder better so it matched up good with me in the highpower rifles. The Pyrodex pellets seem to work well in most inlines.

RE: Going Back to Pyrodex Pellets
You guys are going to love the black mag 3 . Its the best Ive tryed between goex , pyrodex and 777 . One word of advise start with a low charge . 90 grains of black mag to me is like 110 or 120 of 777 .I have heard that the pioneir powder is weaker than 777 , the opposite is true of black mag , they got the mag part of the name right . I got real good accuracy out of it and the fouling is a white waxy residue that cleans easyly
