Patched Round Balls and Fast Twist
I bought a box of round balls and lubed patches for a gun (1 in 48) that’s not around anymore. Now I have a new rifle that is 1 in 32”. I spend a lot of time at the range and can not help wondering what would happen if I tried them in this gun. Thanks

RE: Patched Round Balls and Fast Twist
skyler - keep the powder charge around 50-70 grains and the rifle might surprise you how well it will shoot roundball. There is an old myth that a fast twist barrel will not shoot roundball. That is not always true. Granted they will not shoot as well as say a 1-66 or 1-70 twist, but if you keep the powder charges low, the ball will not skip the rifling and I have seen and own even a 1-28 twist rifle have excellent accuracy with roundball.

Go for it. You never know what will happen till you try it.
Start with light (50gr) loads and work up till it falls apart, your sure to find something that works. Also try a tighter patch as that will help it stay in the groove and maybe handle a bit more powder. My 1 in 28 shoots PRB pretty well up to around 70 or 80 grains of 777 2F if I use an 18 to 20 thousandths patch. |
RE: Patched Round Balls and Fast Twist
My Remington 700Ml (1/28" twist)shoots roundballs very accurately at 50 yds.I use Hornady swaged round balls with.018 pillow ticking,50 gr.777,and either remington #11 caps or WW 777 209 primers. It will shoot into 1.5" at 50 yds.My gun shoots to the same point of aim with this load that it does with 200 gr Shockwave,100 gr.777,WW 777 209 primer at 100 yards.SoI don't even have to change my scope zero.I use the roundballs for cheap, low recoil practice.
