I have just bought some hoppes solvent and patch lube, I had to special order it here so I felt committed to take it home but it's not what I expected.I didnt know that it was a liquid.I thought I read somewhere that it was like bore butter in consistency, anyways I dont care as long as it works. I have had a problem with bore butter freezing in really cold weather so I want to try something else. I know some of you guys use this stuff. what do you think is the best way to use it. I have a real problem with setting a wet patch on black powder. Thanks.

If putting a damp patch on powder concerns you, try adding a dry fiber wad between the powder and the patch and ball. See what kind of difference that makes on your accuracy. You might like a wad. Many rifles actually shoot better with them.

I use both Natural Lube 1000 and Hoppes No9 Plus (BP solvent & patrch lube).

NL1000 forhunting, and at the range during normalto high humidity months.

I useHoppes No9 Plus at the range during dry low dry humidity months because it IS a liquid and lets me shoot the whole range session without wiping between shots...however, admittedly the wet patch is only on thye powder for less than a minute before the shot is taken...and it is outstanding stuff by the way.

Marketed as a patch lube, I'd be verysurprised if it affected powder although I understand yourreservations about putting anything wet on the powder...the over powder wad would be one way to eliminate your concerns, just be sure to rezero your rifle if you decide to use them.

Asto the question of bore butter freezing...I'm not clear on the circumstances:

1) If you mean a bore butter lubed patchfreezes inside the bore, personally I wouldn't worry about itbecause when that inferno is touched off inside I'm sure it liquifies instantly...people have used bore butter patches for decades all up through the northern cold climates.

2) If you mean when you go to reload, a newpatch is frozen and difficult to load, I would think you could just carry the reloads under your coat somewhere so your body temp keeps everything OK.

i saw bore butter freeze at range in dec.a lot of cursing.its not so good in winter with patch/ball. i used it on my maxi-balls for 35 years. some temps were 20 below here in pa.the bore butter in your BARREL will freeze.its a son o f gun to push a patch or maxi down barrel when bb is frozen in barrel.i started not using any bore butter in BARREL during winter.i used it on maxi-ball.as for patch/ball,i stopped using them in winter LONG AGO.i am too busy looking for horns than worrying about a patch/ball being nasty to push in. mostly i kill my buck with 1 shot and i load rifle at home, in warm.take care

Hoppe's No. 9 NITRO POWDER SOLVENT is just exactly that- a solvent for cleaning smokeless powder guns, and is completely worthless for cleaning black powder fouling out of a gun! Hoppe's No. 9 PLUS is supposed to be a black powder fouling solvent, and may be marginally satisfactory for BP guns. If it works, it's because it contains water, but it is no better than plain hot water for cleaning up black powder fouling! However, Hoppe's No. 9 NITRO POWDER SOLVENT sure makes your gun room smell like a gun room should smell!!

For use with conical projectiles, particularly flat-based ones, all you need is to put a prelubed Wonder Wad of the correct diameter under the bullet when you load up-if you do this, there's no need for any kind of a lubricant on the bullet.

These .45 and .50 groups were shot at 100 yards with naked, home-cast pure lead Maxi-balls with WonderWads on top of the powder charges. No leading occurred!



After you have cleaned all fouling out of the bore of your gun completely, to preserve it, swab it out with a pach soaked in Birchwood-Casey SHEATH. This stuff totally prevents rust & corrosion, and dries in the pores of the steel so you don't have to even wipe the bore before loading the gun next time.

Leave the Bore Butter at Wal-Mart!

Mypersonal hands on experience is that Hoppes No9 Plus BP Solvent & Patch Lube is simplyoutstanding...don't know about water butit contains kerosene...50 shot range sessions year round in allweather conditions without ever having to wipe between shots, and when I get home a bore so clean that barely a trace of color appears in the bucket of hot soapy water, is all the proof anybody needs.

Had people who know about Hoppes No9 +lined up tp take advantage of the great price I got on it...kept 10 bottles for myself and sold the other 30 bottles immediately...had to turn away otherscontacting me to buy some.

Anyone who decides tothrow out any Natural Lube 1000, just send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly for you:D...it's the only bore lube I've used for 15+ years in as many muzzleloaders and the bores are still like new today. :D

i like bore butter in my bore before i load a patch/ball. i also like it on my patchs. it makes pushing ball in bore better. i agree with you, i dont use it now for hunting or target shooting in WINTER, i went to powerbelts in my flintlock.to much trouble in cold weather for me yet i never had problem for 35 years using it HUNTINGand storing gun. but, if i was using rb here in pa. in winter for hunting, i would not use bore butter in bore or on patchs.i would use hoppes on patch,nothing in bore.i think powerbelts are greatest thing i have seen in years.
