Black English Flints in TC Flintlocks
Hunting season is on the horizon and for those hunting with Flintlocks, just wanted to share another range report of how outstanding 3/4" x 7/8" black English flints work in TC's current style flint lock assemblies.
Shot my Saturday morning50 shot range session today starting with a new flint installed, and neverhad to touch it during the entire session...just need deer & squirrel season to get here :D |
RE: Black English Flints in TC Flintlocks
sounds like your lock is really tuned. While a new one will give me almost 20 shots without a miss fire, then I have to start knapping. Are you turning this flint every so often to get that kind of life out of it?

RE: Black English Flints in TC Flintlocks
They're just TC's current production factory locks...nothing tuned.
No, I haven't been rotating these flints...that's something I learned to do with flints having that 'humpback' shape...the slope risesup so rapidily that the edge becomes thick very quickly as it wears down shorter...with flints that are thin and flat, their edge stays thin and sharp much, much longer. I intentionally made myself use up allmy humpback shapes at the range and have finally finishedthem all up during the past couple years...nothing but thin flat razor sharp ones left, and have been using them all this year...most of them go through the whole session without knapping or with only one knapping...and most of them survive all the way through a second 50 shot sessionfor 100 shots total, and still going strong...usually have toknapp it a couple timesduring the second 50 shot session. Going after Flintlock squirels in October and deer in November...won't be long now:D |
RE: Black English Flints in TC Flintlocks
I myself with the black english flints on my hawkens and renegade flinters have seen as much as 65 shots on one flint, funny I set-up the same way and seem some flints will last longer then others.
I like to order from TOTW seem if you ask for flat tops they will send you them without any problems,I find that t/c locks like the thinner flints . |
