Roundball, they were the Tom Fuller flints I ordered from TOTW. I am happy with how they perform once you get them set up but was surprised how some knapped themselves in half before settling in and shooting good.

The 3/4" are way oversized for the new rifle but the the 5/8 seem to fit it fine. I will concure with the poster that said give a nickles width gap on the old rifle that is what worked best with these flints.

Boy these guns are fast. The old Renegade really is faster than the new rifle so far but it ain't broke in.

yes, old lock etc.knickel away and bevel down. i never had miss fire.as for 3/4 flints, had same problem, the 5/8 fit better. so, i listened to rb and cayugad and i got a mizzy wheel and i ground down sides and top .they fit real nice but yes, they were to wide for my hawkins also. i really think if i had kept my flint a knickel away ,bevel down on the old hawkins locks,i would not have chewed up the old frizzens on t/c hawkins.i agree now, with new locks and flint bevel UP,about 1/16 away, as rb said, is way to go.

lyman frizzens do work real good but you have to grind then sometimes to make them work good.some are tight. RMC has frizzen that mr.rightnour made just for the t/c hawkins.it is case hardened.i bought one and it is real nice. you dont get those deep gouges in it like i did tc frizzen. www.rmcsports.com

RE: Flinting woes.

FYI...

1) 3/4" black English work best in TC locks...they're as wide as the frizzen and scrape more surface area than the little 5/8"...every now and then one will be a tad long...just take the flint leather and punch or cut a 1/4" hole in the middle of the bend...this gets the leather out of the way and lets you slide the flint all the way back against the jaw screw so the length is not a problem...line up the inside edge with the edge of the frizzen so it doesn't nick the barrel...if an occasional one is a little wide, it'll stick out on the outside and won't bother a thing...tried all the agates, tried the 5/8's, been using 3/4"for well over 6000+ shots and without a doubt they're the best flint in all ofmy TC locks.

2)TC's new style locks have far bettergeometry than the old style and give muchbetter sparks and much longer flint life than the old style;

3) TC new style locks already have animproved frizzen on them...maximum sparks, long flint life...no longer any need to get any otherbrand of frizzen and try tomodify it to fit;

all my fuller 3/4 flints stuck out side of frizzen,about 1/8 inch.the 5/8 ones fit perfect.hey, you should know ,not me but i like the 5/8 ones better on fit.like you say ,it does not harm. i ground mine down straight and they fit ok.i had to or bulge could have hit my barrel and i did not want all that flint sticking out beyond the frizzen. i like things real neat and that bothered me with that flint sticking out beyond the frizzen. most will tell you to use a 5/8, you like 3/4 and thats fine. i think its to wide,ha.

Of course everyone should use what ever they want.....just take note, however, thatTC frizzens are 3/4" wide...they are wider than a little 5/8" flint.

I'm just responding to posts about difficulties and sharing what I've learned...what I know from non stop repeated use year after year in TC locks for quite a few thousand shots now...and I'm nothavingflint or ignition difficulties using 3/4" flints...indeed, I get outstanding performance and extremely long flint life from them.
