200 yd
just for fun i took my encore to the range to do some experimenting
what i found is that it likes the shock waves 300grthe best. after getting a good grope at 100yd's i tryed for the 200yd target. the 200yd target is a 8 inch squarepiece of flat steel which hangs on a chain so theres no doubt when ya hit the thing .zeroed a 100yd's i found that i had to aim 16 inches high to hit it. but what amazed me the most was that i took 3 shots at it and hit it 3 times.ya got ta love that. |
RE: 200 yd
The encore is a great rifle and has a reputation for excellent accuracy. With todays muzzleloaders, polymer tipped bullets and BP substitues like 777, doing the 200 yard shot with a muzzleloader isn't out of the question these days. With a load your mz likes and some good range time, making kills at that range is very feasible.

RE: 200 yd
Well it sounds like you have a great load there and you have shown that the rifle is able to shoot 200 yards. Now all you need do is apply all this to your hunting or future target shooting. Good shooting and good luck with the rifle in the future.

RE: 200 yd
last year i took my winchester x150 .50cal to the range and loaded it with 150 grains pyrodex RS and a 245 grain powerbelt. At 100 yards i put it 7 inchs high, shot a great group and then pulled back to 200 yards and and was dead on! Good thing to, i dropped 2 deer 2 months later at 148yards and 143 yards off hand. Im from Colorado so i wasnt using a scope. Even tho one of the deer i shot was during rifle season. Its a shame when my muzzleloader out shoots my 30-30 lol. Thats okay tho, during rifle season i had a good laugh at all the hunters emptying their gun twice trying to hit a deer and here i go and drop one with 1 shot, open sights and off hand at 143 yards. Rifle hunters need to learn to relax, take your time and work into range and stop taking 500 yard shots with a stinkin 243!

RE: 200 yd
How many grains powder/pellets are you using? I need to get out to 200yd and also have 300gr shockwaves.

RE: 200 yd
I have a couple of nice loads for the 300SST/SW. It shoots nearly the same accuracy using 100gr loose 777 and 130gr of Pyro pellets with the latter being about 170fps faster at around 1950. Using a 3" high at 100 yards sight in the 130gr load is down about 5" at 200, the 100gr load is down about 7.5". Typical groups at 200 are 4" or less.
I hope that helps. |
RE: 200 yd
Thanks for the info dmurphy317. I was using 250gr hornady SST/ML with 130gr pellets. Had nice group at 50 yds but when I moved back to 100yds they started flying all over the place. I'm hoping the bigger bullet weight will give more control. Thanks again for the info.

Try the same powder load with a Harvester or MMP-3P plastic sabotwith a sub-base attached. That may get you down to around 12" low. The 300 gr. sabot is the ultimum grain size for 1-28" twists.... in my opinion. That twist is so forgiving that any sabot from 180-400 gr. will generally produce nice hunting groups with the right powder/bore diameter combo... once in a while needing a fiber wad or sub-base for tweaking. |

I haven't shot alot of powerbelts, but those I have, exited at lower velocity than comparable weight of lubricated all-lead conical. In my Sidekick, there was alot more friction with the bore. Don't know if this is the cause, contributes, or doesn't contribute to Redclubs puzzling, but verified, ballistics. |
RE: 200 yd
I have shot a lot of powerbelts and those are the actual drops shot out of
2 Omega's and my White is pretty close to that with 105gr T7 with a 460 NE. 2' high 77yds. 118 dead on 160 6' low 200 20" low. I have shot this a lot and its always the same. I have these drops taped to the stock and while hunting I carry a range finder. Redclub |

RE: 200 yd
One think I didn't consider and I don't know if it matters the 77 yard target is about 2to3ft. lower than the 118 yard target. The 160 yard target is also a couple of feet lower than the 200 yard target.
I have 2 backstops and 2 shooting benches thats how I get the 4 yardages. I shoot over the low target to hit the high target. Confusing?I have a feeling that all ranges are kinda like this. charts might take into account a perfect level field. |
RE: 200 yd
Shooting uphill or downhill will cause the trajectory to be flatter. Imagine shooting straight down, the trajectory would have zero drop. Same effect if you shoot straight up.
The difference between 2 or 3 feet would not make a difference. |
RE: 200 yd
Redclub,
Small differences in angle as you described will not make any significant differences in the range to the target and therefore will not greatly influence the trajectory. For your 460NE load, I sight in 3.5" high at 100 yardswhich gives a point blank range on an 8" target of 165 yards, zero at 140 and down 12" at 200 yards. This is with 90gr of 777 2F and a muzzle velocity of 1470.8" may be a bit wide for deer but I use it for elk and get 4" or less groups at 200 yards. |
RE: 200 yd
While I think the shockwave 300 grain bullet is a fine tool, I have been using the 250 grain version for the past couple of years and taken many deer with it.I have actually been able to recover 3 bullets from deer and theirterminal performance was great. The pictures can be seen in the thread at, http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1382997&mpage=1 I personally don't think, for white tail, you need the 300 grain bullet, but that is a personal choice.
What I do know that in my Encore, loaded with a regular winchester primer, 130 grains of loose 777 and a 250 grain shockwave, 200 yards is no problem at all. Using a lazer range finder to make sure of the yardage, my rounds shoot about 3 inches high at 100 yards 3 inches low at 150 yards and about 7 1/2 inches low at 200 yards. Groupsat 100 yards are almost cloverleaf and the drop as the distance increases is straight down verticle. The only possible changes I might make in my setup this year is that I might try the 200 grain shockwave and/or the bonded shockwave. But, I really am not that excited to change anything. Hank |
RE: 200 yd
I tried the Bonded Shockwave andthe regular ShockwaveSabotsboth 245 grain out of my Apex with 777 Pellets 100 grain and they shot exactly the same at 100 yards
