Need some recommendations
I am slowly getting my finances in a place where I can make my next major BP purchase and I would like to hear your opinions...
My next weapon will be a traditional flintlock, Pennsylvania or Tennessee style of long rifle.I am leaning toa 54 Cal, but would consider others, I want to shoot some roundballjust for enjoymentand possibly hunt also. I plan to spend somewhere about $600 or $700. What would you all recommend and why? |

These would have some of the better quality locks and barrel and produce you excellent accuracy, exceptional style, and value. They might be a little more then you want to spend depending on how nice of a rifle you want to move into and it take a while to get the rifle produced since these are all hand made.
You could also look at http://www.rmcsports.com/catalog.htmRMC Sports. He makes an excellent rifle with a Green Mountain Barrel, Davis lock, and his flintlocks have a removable breech plug for easier cleaning. The are real fine rifles as well. There is of course the Lyman Great Plains rifle with the 1-60 twist which will be a great shooting roundball rifle as well as an excellent hunting rifle. Lyman makes a good lock and their accuracy is excellent as well... Just a few places to start looking.. Good luck in your search. |

Dixie Gun Works has the Pedersoli Pennsylvania 50-cal flint on sale for $495 right now. Scroll down when you reach this link below. Lots of nice guns there. Even the Dixie Cub Rifleis on sale for $425.

I'm not sure what the twist is on the Austin and Halleck mountain rifles, but they are nice and the Sportsmansguide has some in .50 caliber /flintlock. The price on them has dropped too. If you buy one from them and even if you take and shoot it for years, as long as you keep the original receipt you can send it back for a full refund. I looked around and TC's Custom shop has some 54. and .58 hawkens in flintlock. They are 1 in 48" twist but should do the job of shooting roundballs very well. My 1 in 38" firehawk shoots them well. Thompson Center would have the best warranty and be my first choice if i were buying a mass produced rifle. Thompson Center alsohas the best quality of all the mass producedtraditional riflesin my opinion too.Heres the link. Phone is at the bottom of the page.

I have a Pedersoli Frontier 50 cal with both the flint and the percussion lock. It's a really nice long rifle for the money.

Well with out going into two pages to explain why after several years of experiment and trial and error [I was building Hawken replicas at the time]I came to the conclusion that a 35 or 36 inch barrel and a 54 caliber was the best long range and hunting PRB gun it is true that for an inline sabot rifle a 50 cal. is a better choice for a slug shooter a 45 is nice so it really depends on the use you will put it to.
