Conical chucker - White, any White ML... I took my largest buck ever at 185 yards with a 496gn conical, 85gn of T7 2f, out of a White Super 91 .504 caliber.

I just need to ask, being a new White Ultra Mag owner... was the rifle scoped? What was the rifle sighted in at? What was the amount of drop at that distance? Did you get complete pass through? How far did the animal run? And last, what kind of damage did that conical do?

Trashed the liver, hit both back lobes of the lungs, .504 hole going in, just a bit bigger going out.

Here is the link to the post, I forgot to mention the powder and weight used and mixed up my drop on 180 and 190 when I posted... I do have a drop chart taped to my stock as a quick reference when in the field to avoid those mix ups;).

Excellent story and a great buck... Where I hunt most the shots are 50 yards although there are a few fields where a 100 yard or better could be. I decided to sight my Ultra Mag in at 70 yards. that way I can handle most any shot that needs to be done. It's nice to know that a White can do the long distance so well...

I have taken several long distance shots with my Whites over the years... nothing as long as UC's doe though, over 200yds. That shot was my longest... I would never have attempted it had I not already ranged that rise and knew where my conical was hitting. The range I practice at allows me 187yd shots... just about perfect for that hunt last winter. The range allowed me to confirm through practice where my ballistic program said the conical would be hitting.

This idea of confirming where the gun is actually hitting is the key to successful use of a steep-trajectory projectile at extended ranges. You can't just trust a ballistics table to tell you this vital information.

That is why I included that last line... I have found the ballistic program to be on the nose with trajectory but it should always be backed up by practice to confirm it.
