RE: Shooting sticks, poles or what?

I made one from a camera tripod. Used for years and it is very adjustable. I only use it while sitting down and posted on stand. Its too cumbersome to use while still hunting.

Thanks for the suggestions and pictures. That helps. I think I will start with something similar to those on the Precision Rifle website.
using hawkins from 1971 to now. i hunt bucks only.when i walk into where i am going to sit in heavy woods of pa. i use shooting stick. after i sit down or stand,i dont. if i am stalking ,say for 100 yards in heavy cover, i use tree.on way back out, i use shooting stick on path to car. if not for shooting stick, i believe i would not have got at least 6 buck and i could have taken many doe with those sticks. last year i went into my spot without stick. there in path was a nice buck. i could not for life of me freehand with open sights hold on that buck.with sticks, i know i would have got that 8 point buck.you cant move to tree with buck that has been hunted hard here in pa. its freehand or sticks, move to tree and its bye bye.take care.

I prefer bipods attached to the swivel studs. Most times I am able to get down and get the shot as the areas that I hunt are fairly open. For the off hand shot I make sure I have a sling and that really seems to improve accuracy with a good hold. A good book to read on shooting techiniques is called "The Art of the Rifle." I call this a PhD level lesson in how to really use your gun. Great tips and very helpful to answer the questions you just don't want to ask on here for fear of ridicule.

Funny grasshopper! I thought I was fairly knowlegdeable as a shooter until I read this book. Those old retired marines have a few more tips of insight than my West Texas ranch shooting days.
