Omega question
 

I am thinking about getting an Omega for deer hunting in iowa. I just wanted to know how does everyone that has one like it? I know every gun is different but what loads does your gun like? And what is the accuracy like? Thanks

I have one and i really think it is a good gun - it is very accurate and it has TC's lifetime warranty. The only negative that i can think of to report to you is some of them have really tight bores and it can be a search to get the right sabot, if you intend to shoot sabots...

The Omega is a great rifle. It is a simple, timeless design that just flat performs.Type inOmega intothe search feature of this site and it will return more information about the gun than you can digest.

My Omega has one of those really tight barrels that Sabotloader referred to in his post. He informed me of the HPH-24 sabot from MMP, which is a bit thinner then the "standard" .50 cal sabots. It solved my loading problems. Lurk around this site and you will be an expert by deer season.

Great gun in my opinion, I shot 100 gr. (2 pyrodex pellets) and Thompson/Center Shock Wave Sabots 250 gr. I get a 2 inch group at 100 yds.

I have a Omega Z5 it shoots extremly well for a cheap gun [got it for $160 on sale at wally world]. It shoots good groups with 250gr or 200 gr Shockwaves the 250's with group well with 100 to 140 gr of APP FF and the 200's will group well with 100,110 or 140 or 150 gr App FF. It also likes the similarXTP with MMP -24 sabot and the same load which is whatI usefor pratice. Lee

Great gun. Just wish it had a slightly larger trigger guard. I wear huge gloves when it gets cold.

Be sure to buy the black 45/50 plastic sabots after purchasing the Omega. The ones you want are:
MMP HPH-24
MMP three petal
Harvester (Regulars)
Harvester crush ribs.

Makes loading easier.

There is nothing I can add that hasn't been said..but I'll try I've had my Omega for 3 months and have already blown through two pounds of triple 7. SST/Shockwaves seem to be made for this gun as well as XTP's and many other rounds. I too had issues with a tight barrel which I have solved with the use of harvestor crushed ribbed sabots. I cannot personally comment on how this gun performs with conicals or round balls, however, I have not heard anyone having issues with these projectiles. Accuracy is incredible and if Iowa doesn't allow scopes, like Minnesota, the fiber-optic Williams sites are great.

Cleanup is simple and you cannot argue with T/C's committment to their product. There is a wealth of information on this forum and many omega shooters willing to share their insight.

How do I like mine? Well, my 30-06 may never see action again.

In iowa we can use scopes and i plan on using sabots. Also i am more interested in using loose powder instead of pellets

I have my SS Brown/Black laminate Omega scoped w/ a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 and load it w/ 120 gr of loose 777 and a 250gr TC Shockwave/Hornady SST (same thing).. and shoot 3" groups at 150yds and 6" groups at 200yds. Here in IN we don't normally get shots that far.. but I'm glad that my gun will do it if needed. I've been completely impressed w/ my setup and wouldn't change it for anything at the current time. Also no stupid disks to mess with [8D]!!!

Scott, I shoot 120g of loose Pyrodex with a 200g Shockwave and it is a great combo in my rifle. Zeroed at 100 yards with this load puts me 1/2" low at 150 yards and 3" low at 200 yards. I also use the Remington Cleanbore primers whichI don't find any better than the other brands I have used, maybe a touch cleaner. I have taken two whitetails, a coyote,and an antelope with this load andthe total tracking distance for all three combined is 50 yards. I do have a Leupold 3X9-40 VXII, which I absolutely love, mounted on this rifle.Good Luck.
