Ultra Mag Scope Bases
#1
There has been asomediscussionon what scope bases to use for an Ultra Mag. I have been trying several different options including bases for an Austin & Halleck
Well, one set of bases came in today from Numrich. I purchased from them the suggested bases by Numrich. S-455 base and S-452 base. I removed my scope tonight and did some comparing. The S-455 base in my mind is worthless either as a rear base or a front base. See the picture at the bottom of the page.
The other base shows some promise. as either a front or rear base.
The top picture shows the current installation of a 3x9x40 Bushnell Trophy using a A&H bases and medium Burris "Z" rings. The only problem I have with this installation is the objective is so close to the barrel I can not get a scope cover on and second I would like a little more support on the long portion of the tube.
You can see in pic 3 with the rear base moved to the front I can get a little more support but will need to drill an additional hole.
I am currently waiting for the extended bases from Doc White. The extended front base he is sending should cure my support problem, but not the heighth problem. Of course I could cure that with higher rings.
At this time I am really thinking theWeaver Grand Slam S-415 bases, both front and rear, which are a bit taller is the best all around bet for the White Ultra Mag. This will allow the installation of almost any scope. Be aware that an additional hole will need to be drilled in the base that is installed on the front

With the scope you are using you are in good shape. If you want to go to a larger scope things get awful tight awful quick. I did put a a relativly short Bushnell Trophy and with the regular Weaver Bases it was a no go. I also tried a Sightron SI - and it would have been a real eye banger...
I think I almost have it all worked out. Waiting for the extended base from Doc.

This from Maestro TODAY at 24hr Campfire: "just ordered the laminant 504 cal from Rick at the Phoenix branch. Steve is at the same location, but was out this morning. I did go thru the checklist, and all the things were included.
299 + 15 for shipping."

So - in other words, UC - you've convinced another guy to get an Ultra Mag - right? Is Doc giving you a commission for each of these? He ought to
Did you tell Maestro to do some reading before he springs for scope bases?
I'm currently waiting for the modified ones to arrive from Woodgoat - I'll let youse guys know how they work out. I also got a new camera (Mother's Day gift for my wife
) so now I can post some good pics. Who knows - I may even be able to post a target . . . someday

I did suggest he get the modified ones from Woodgoat - but I think he went ahead and bought Weaver 11&35, which are about the worst choice he could have made.
Point of the post is there ARE some left in Phoenix and they WILL ship.
And, oh by the way
, commission? Whut'z dat? Doc couldn't pay me a dime off these UMs because he isn't making a penny. These were sold to Sportsman's Warehouse about three years ago by WhiteRifles (the company). I don't think Doc makes a penny from that company either. Only commission I get is reading about satisfied Johns.

That's my way of thinkin'. Guy always needs a spare.
Really, since Sabotloader and Cayugad have had great results with sabots, I'm considering sighting one in with 200 grain bullets in the blue sabots and leaving the other one for conicals (but don't tell anyone I said that).
I generally don't like usin' recycled milk jugs in my muzzleloaders.
