Alcohol and ?
I did an experiment with my brake cleaner and found it leaves my barrel a bit sticky or at least harder to load. I am interested in one of the alcohol and widex or windshield warsher cobinations; hoping some one has done some of the ground work as to what workers best with what.
I will be using it with APP primarily though I still have some pinnacle and Gold to use up [I think I will pour the 777 in the stool I don't want to fool with it if some body lives rel close and don't care what they put in their gun they would be welcome to it ?] Any info would be appriciated. RE: Alcohol and ?
Where do you live Lemoyne? I'll take that 777 off your hands if you are near West Tennessee.
I use the 50:50 isopropyl alcohol - windshield washer fluid. I buy it in gallon jugs from walmart. There is a summer and a winter formula, and I presume the winter formula has alcohol as an antifreez additive. I used the winter formula this past season and really liked the results. It dries quickly with no residue. |
RE: Alcohol and ?
Lee - You can take a nice drive up here to Michigan and give me the 777.
What is it you don't like about it? Strange that so many others have good results with it and you don't - maybe it doesn't mix with brake cleaner :D I've been using that 50/50 mix of Isopropyl and BLUE WW fluid, and it works great. IM jaybe :) |
RE: Alcohol and ?
same here, my swab solution for the inline rifles is alcohol and windshield washer fluid. It seems to work for me so I am not changing anything.

RE: Alcohol and ?
underclocked.. I don't think this was not a fill in the blank, but at least we have a better understanding of how you think through your example of word association. :D:D:D

RE: Alcohol and ?
Thanks guys,it looks like 50/50 alk/windshildwarsher is what I will try.
I would try the ALK /WOMAN one Underclocked but I don't think my wife would like it.Lee Jaybe, I have a couple of cans of crud ring, there are several reasons why I don't like it. #1 If my strain gage shows a reading I don't like at a normal load like 110 then I pass. #2 Is the famous crud ring,I have to scrub the area where the bullet sits every shot.[If you noticed the target I posted a while back with APP and SW 250's It was the first time I ever shot Bonded SW and the best group I ever got at 150yd with a Muzzle loader ,I wiped evey other shot] #3 In my opinion the crud ring shows along with the strain gage that most if not all the powder is burning before the bullet is hardly moving, I like a long steady push at a reasonable pressure so I stick with the slower burning powder and longer barrels. To each his own; I used to know a guy back in the 60's that juggled live hand grenades. Lee |
RE: Alcohol and ?
I use the 50/50 mix of isop. & w/w fluid. I put it in a
spray bottle. I use the APP also in my Omega, one wet, two dry between every shot works great for me. With the clean bore I have no problem at all loading the crushrib sabot & 300gr. Hornady XTP-mags. Hope it will work well for you too. Danny |
RE: Alcohol and ?
AQUATECH, thank you, since I am working with an Omega and APP your info is very helpful. I just got some blue windshield warsher and some 99% alk. will try as soon as I can get away.
Also since you shoot an Omega there is some thing you might be interested in. I found some old plastic ear plugs in my junk box and decieded to try making a seal for when the gun sits loaded but unprimed during hunting season,it works really well if you are interested say so and I will detaid it. Lemoyne
You're right - especially with three dollar gas! Thanks anyway Mouthcaller |
RE: Alcohol and ?
Triple F, and 50/50 alcohol, windshield wiper fluid is a good combo.
College Kids at private party, and 50/50 alcohol, and stripper very bad combo. Especially if you throw in a D.A. up for election. C. Davis |

RE: Alcohol and ?
was wondering do you guys trust that windshield wash? how can you be sure of the % of water and other chemicals in that blue stuff unless its listed. i know you can get the alcohol at 99% and 70% but do you really know whats going in those blue jugs. i know its cheap but i would be worried that a little extra water or other crap in those jugs would make me worried. also isint there ammonia in windshield cleaner? i know ammonia is used in cleaning copper out of a barrel but is kinda harsh and you have to get it all out cause it eats metal over time. just curious?

RE: Alcohol and ?
liquidorange.I was looking at the same problem and went with the winter mixture because they control that so it will notfreeze above certain tempatures; so far it is working quite well. Lee

RE: Alcohol and ?
I might stay away from the winter mixture as that stuff has calcium chloride or something similiar mixed in so you don't have to scrape the frost off your wind shield.
I don't mix my "what ever's the cheapest brand washer fluid" with isoprop alcohol. I do use the straight isoprop. to get out the rem oil or bore butter (which ever I used so my bore wouldn't rust in storage,) before the first shot. In another post I did detail my cleaning regime that works with 3fg 777 and makes the crud ring a none issue. 1. Soak a patch in washer fluid, and run it up and down with the bore brush, not a normal jag. If the fouling is light like most times I just get the brush wet and use that to break everything up. 2. Switch to a loading/general use jag and a dry patch to get all the broken up crud and dry the bore. 3. Using a stiff brush I clean the chamber side of the breech plug. I truly believe that the whole crud ring thing is because people don't clean enough between shots. Unfortunatly for 777 it means you prettty much clean after each and every. |
