Almost stuck breech plug-need help to prevent
Just got done cleaning after the first day out. I like to never have gotten the breech plug out. I had lubed it up with Knights breech plug grease in a quanity that I thought was plenty. I left it finger tight when I had put it into the rifle. I had to put the barrell in a vice to get the plug out. I have some anti-sieze Stick that I purchased from Cabelas that I plan on using next outing. Does anyone have recommendations on how to keep the breech plug from siezing. Don't want to fight it again.

If your breech plug is too tight for tape and lube as some are, I use CVA Slick Nipple & Breech Plug Grease. I had terrible luck with Thompson Center Breech Plug Grease and Knight Breech Plug Grease. In fact once I found the CVA I never went to any other brand.
When you coat the threads real heavy, screw the plug in. When it feels tight, back it off about a quarter turn. After you have shot about 10 rounds, reach in there (even if you have to pull the bolt or hammer its a good time to wipe it all out in there anyway) take your tool and twist that plug back and fourth a little. This will break any of the hard fowling that is seizing the plugs. Also if you get the thing stuck, plug the breech with a spent primer and some tape. Put the end of the rifle in a cup, and pour hot soap and water down the barrel and let that soak both inside and out for a couple minutes. The hot soap and water will help to break all that down. If you check your plug every 10 shots or so, you will seldom or ever have a problem getting the plug out. I like to Teflon tape the threads and then anti seize them if the rifle will allow. It feels real tight putting them in there but I think that keeps the fowling also out of there and hence, locking it up. |

The Cabelas stick is good. Just alot to pay for very little. Buy the stuff Cayugad recommends & take that breechplug wrench to the range with you. Slightly loosen it & re-snug it every several shots. When you finish shooting, immediately loosen the plug a couple of turns before going home.
That will end all your worries. |

Another neat little trick especially if you are using Triple Se7en is to pour a little water or cleaning fluid down the bore wait a minute or two and your plug should come right out.
I also need to endorse the CVA Slick Nipple grease best stuff I have ever used. I use it on all my m/l's and the price is very fair. |

I've not tried the CVA BP greese but any quality anti-seize should work. I use the Permatex brand that I got from the local auto parts store for about $3. One tube should last me about 10+ years at the rate I'm using it, and I use it on 5 different rifles at least once a month. I have never had a stuck, or even moderately tight breach plug since I started using this stuff. After 30+ shots using 2F 777, evenwithout excercising the plug every few shots, the plug comes out with little more than finger pressure. I do make sure there is coverage out to the sealing surface of the plug which I think helps in that regaurd.
Good luck with it. |

Humidity and plug face design helps determine how much the plug may stick when using an identical breechplug grease in different situations. New Mexico won't see the humidity we get in the Greak Lakes area. Plus.. my flat-face Omega breechplug fares better/comes out easier than the concave faced one.

Here in Eastern Washington it is fairly dry. I will be trying the STIK on my next outing. If it works I will stay with it. If not I will be in search of the pink teflon tape. Is there any special place to get the pink teflon tape? I can't recall seeing it at Home Depot or Lowes. Thanks.

You can by the pink tape from TC but it really is expensive... I do get mine from Home Depot or even Lowes - probably in the Gas line department - for gas black pipe. On my Omega and now the Ultra Mag I have been using just plain old white tape - the breech plugs are so tight the pink tape is to thick... |
