100 yards. I'm not sure that Pyrodex will kick any more than the Triple 7 load. I have used 150 grains of Pyrodex, both loose and in pellet form, with 300 grain Barnes Expanders in the past. Got speeds in the upper 1900's - about the same velocity as what the 120 gr. of 2F T7 is delivering.

RE: 300 Gr. Gold Dot Obturation
Hmmm. These may have some potential as well. I'm thinking, at least at this point, that the Sierra and Hornady jacketed bullets are going to be more difficult to get to obturate than the electroplated Speer or Ranier. I base this on the way that the electroplated bullets have worked in for me in handguns compared to regular jacketed bullets. Same weight bullet in the Gold Dot tends to run higher pressures, suggesting a better "slug up" to seal the bore. I wish I could get a few samples without having to buy an entire box - to try the Sierra or the Hornady. I'm sure they would perform well if we could get them to shoot.

RE: 300 Gr. Gold Dot Obturation
I just got finished cleaning the gun. As expected, there was a distinct copper wash on each of the lands. Have never seen this before in a muzzleloader. Came out without much trouble with a little elbow grease - 20 gauge brass brush and some wet patches soaked in Butch's Bore Shine.

Well, I thinking that is a positive - the bullet are grabbing the lands and that is certainly what you want... Now time will only tell... |
