blueing mottled?
 

I have a T/C Omega w/ blued barrel, shot it about 2 weekends ago cleaned it well and put it in my gun safe. When I took it out tonite I noticed the blueing was mottled on the top of the barrel about 6" back from the muzzle (looks as if the blue faded and you can see light and dark patches). Has anybody had or heard of blueing problems with T/C or any ideas of what may have caused this.

Never heard of a Thompson Center having bluing problems. Actually they have beautiful rifles from my experience. I would give them a telephone call, explain your observations, and see what they suggest to fix this problem..

Figured it out, just a case ofmy own stupidity. Each time I reload I set the barrel against the shooting bench. I looked at my buddies who does the same thing and low and behold he has the same marks on his. So T/C is not at fault it's just me, so I guess I will clean it up, patch blue it and start using a rest for reloading.

i would send it into t/c to have it reblued.they do nice job on blueing.i just got 1 back from them and looks much better than the blueing you buy in bottle.they bake it on .

Thanks for the email and tips on blueing. I usually use a hair dryer it heats it up pretty good but I haven't used the oil as you suggested.

thats good question.will a hair dryer get barrel warm enough?i have friend that heated barrel 7 times with torch andblueing you get from birchwoods.it looked real good.i dont think hair dryer will get barrel hot enough ,i could be wrong on that. maybe someone could chime in.

I have used a hair dryer to heat receivers enough to seat a barrel and have done quick patch blue jobs using a good hair dryer without a diffuser. Usually gets it hot enough you don't want to grab the area you were heating.

If the hair dryer don't get it,then try a black and decker paint remover thats what I use it gets hot enough to melt paint so be careful.Lee

Thanks that's another good idea I hadn't thought about and I got one hanging in the garage.
