Winchester 209s
Well guys went to the range today and did some shooting. I did have a problem the Winchester 209 caps I had gave me 3 duds they did not fire at all. Has any one else had this problem. Its one thing to have it happen at the range but if that ever happened while you were hunting it could be deverstating. I think I'll try a different brand of caps. What do you think. I guess I could have gotten a bad batch because I haven't heard anything bad about them. Mike

RE: Winchester 209s
Hey Mike,
I have shot over 100 of them and never had one misfire. I'm sure others have shot more than that. I am going to go to a less hot primer when I'm done with the one I have now that I have went to loose powder. I'm shooting a Disc Elite. What are you shooting them in? |
RE: Winchester 209s
I'm shooting Jim Shockys gold (100 gr.) loose in my new T.C. Omega

RE: Winchester 209s
The only other thought I would have is that your pin is not going out all the way. Maybe build up? I have read on other forums where the firing pin was not fully striking the cap. Just a thought.

RE: Winchester 209s
All I can tell you Mike is I have shot over 1000 of them and never had a misfire. Winchester W209's are one of my favorite caps. What kind of rifle were you shooting again? If it has a pin, make sure that pin is sliding free and clear.
If your shooting loose powder, I am having excellent luck with the Remington Kleenbore Primers. Wal Mart put them on sale at the end of season, and I bought all they had.. :D |
RE: Winchester 209s
I must agree with Cayugad I too have shot over a 1000 of the things and every single one has gone off.
Just for a test I would try restriking the same cap a couple times and check to see if the firing pin is dirty or needs a little lube. Be carefull lubing pins though to much oil will gum them up pretty good. So high quality gun oil or dry lube and very little at that is what is needed just like on a bolt rifle. |
RE: Winchester 209s
I shoot APP in my Omega and I'm using the Rem.
kleenbore 209's. I was using the Winchesters but they were hard to remove, and I thought maybe a little too hot so I switched. The kleenbore primers seem to be just the ticket for the APP & I think I get a little better accuracy. |
RE: Winchester 209s
Yea... if yours is a bolt/plunger-action, it may have buildup or dryness. Also check for buildup around the primer-seating area of the breechplug.
Also think about where you are storing the primers & are you taking the whole tin outdoors all the time & leaving the lid open for extended periods. That could ruinsome on multiple humid days. |
RE: Winchester 209s
I am shooting them in my new Omega. When I look at the ones that did not fire I can see where the primer has been struck and the dent is pretty deep. I keep the caps in my gun safe where I control the envirment and at the range I do keep them out but I am still inside shooting out so moisture is not the problem. I just really think that the primer is not fireing I have tried to refire them. I have shot all of the pack that I have had the problem with I am going to open a new pack next trip. So we will see what happens. Mike

Olin Corporation
190 Carondelet Suite 1530 Clayton, MO 63105 Mike, I'd drop them a short letter and explain to Winchester the troubles you have been having. Tell them about your rifle and how you used them. See if they can offer an explaination. Besides, you never know what kind of responce you might get out of them.. Winchester by the way is Olin Corporation. Be sure and include the lot number on the carton from the primers and the W209 information.. it might pay off in the long run for a few minutes time and a stupid stamp. |
