Rifle rest.
Needs some finishing touches yet and a better picture but I have my first prototype wood rifle rest about finished.
Need to shoot from it and work out some bugs too. One thing I found yesterday as I was nearly complete was the rear elevation bolt I had was way toooooooo longggg. Elder moment struck at that point so I didn't do one. Finally this morning I came to my sences, DA just cut the bolt off. No need for it to be as long as the front one the way I see it. OH YA, The new to me Remington 700 ML in 50 cal. NO I do not believe the dealer cleaned this one up either. There were some nasty ML's on the used rack includeing a T/C black Diamond for $95.00 (as is)that was just plain awful. :) Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
Looks like you are going to have a nice rest and at a cheap price.

RE: Rifle rest.

RE: Rifle rest.
alleyyooper,
When you get the bugs worked out of your proto type, I want to be the 1st one to place an order;) |
RE: Rifle rest.
Well congrats on a fine looking rest. I will be
removing all the old socks I have filled with sand as I type this:D Just kidding but when you get all the bugs, worked outand figure out selling price put me on the list...[&:]Don't it feel good when you can say "OK LISTEN UP WORLD I DID IT ALL BY MYSELF!!!!!!" Danny |
RE: Rifle rest.
Good work Alley is that a mix of pine and oak? Can we see the back of it yet?
|
RE: Rifle rest.
Very nice, maybe post a set of plans for us to look at when you are done?

RE: Rifle rest.
Thanks for the nice comments. As I said it is a prototype, I want to build a metal one once my scrape iron pile thaws out. This wood one is all built from scrape 2 x4's I have from building our honey house. I wil try to get a total picture of it to post some time today.
:)Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
i need to make me one of those rests, how did u make the table that its on?
|
RE: Rifle rest.
Well sure makes my homemade sand bags look "red greenish";)!
Good job |
RE: Rifle rest.
The plans for the shooting bench the rest is on is listed on the internet as a booger bench. I also posted those plans in the black powder fourm a few weeks ago as I always wanted a shooting bench.
Maybe any thing home made can be considered Red Greenish, Don't believe that is all bad my self. Wonder just where we would be if people didn't try to build things for their needs, and hit upon some thing the whole world loves. :) Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
Alleyyooper, ya got any galvanized pipe? I'm thinkin' ya could built part (if not most)of the metal one using pipe. Be nice to have a thread cutter though. :)
|
RE: Rifle rest.
That's a good idea Underclocked.. I have the pipe and a bunch of different thread cutters.. Something to consider when the snow melts off the scrap pile. I also want to build a free standing target holder out of galvanized pipe this spring for when I move my bullet trap...

RE: Rifle rest.
alley, I could not agree anymore. One of my other passions is wood working, I love building and make something that is specialized to my needs. I hope you didn't take my comment as directed at your fine project..if so it was not intented that way. Like i said nice job

RE: Rifle rest.
S7MM, I understood what you ment and I knew you were telling me it looked good for a prototype. I know I will need to make some adjustments. Even Norm builds prototypes before he does the Yankee work shop projects. I think he might even build a couple.
Yes some galvanized pipe would work. I don't have a pipe threader or any dies. I think I am just going to weld some angle iron on a 2x4 retangle mainbeam for the front legs. Figure out a way to make that beam adjustable for the size of the different rifle stocks I own. Then bow some flat stock for the front & rearrest welded on some threaded rod for some extra adjustments . Still just in the planing stage and waiting for the thaw. I figure in about two weeks here we will be in the normal March melt all the snow weather then the warm and cold every other day peroid. :) Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
:DJust had to try every thing out Sunday. [:o]Cold 25F with a wind chill of about 9F so I didn't stay too long.
The bench worked great, but I may add some of that rubberized drawer liner to the top to reduce slippage. I need to coat the adjustment bolts heads with the rubber tool handle stuff first, it is also sold in spray cans. :eek:The rifle rest it's self worked OK, need to open the butt stock rest up some. I found that I was adjusting the front bolts/legs on nearly every shot to get the POA the same. Discovered the butt wasn't seating the same each time. I also for got about the sling attchment point and may have had it sitting on that a time or two. OH the shooting? [:'(]Nothing to write home about that is for sure. I was able to keep all shots on paper and probably could have covered them with a big coffee can lid but not what I like. :)Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
Well it is still a great idea, and a good looking set up. I am sure once all the minor bugs are worked out, and that's all they are... you will be shooting the kind of groups you want.

RE: Rifle rest.
I wonder if making the butt rest section such that it could slide up and down that bottom length of wood would give you greater flexibility? You could then fit the rest to different rifles easily.
And is that bottom wood resting directly on the table? Looks pretty dern good to me. |
RE: Rifle rest.
A little square tubing, a welder, some rubber foam or a buddy with all these and the know how to use them..........priceless.
Also comes in handy shooting my .338RUM to have 3 bags of shot on it. Still bucks pretty good! |
RE: Rifle rest.
Yup I had thought about making that butt section movable. But I measured the Model 7 Remington I have then a couple of other Remington model 700's and the distance didn't seem like it would matter.
RRH that one looks good. I plan on some thing like that when my scrap iron pile thaws out. But this wood one seems to work ok with the mild loads I am useing. :)Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
That is one fine looking rest, what do you have tied up in it dollar wise. I have been thinking of buying a bench rest, but after looking at thisI don't know?
|
RE: Rifle rest.
Well a 2x4 at the box stores like HD or Lowe's is about $2.79 for an 8 footer(I used less than 6 feet). The bolts with nuts were $1.08 each. I had the spade bit, and the drill bit to enlager the bolt holes. I used 6 1 5/8 screws (a pound box cost about $7.00). My time is priceless at this time of year :D:D:Djust sitting on my butt getting fat. Now in March, April and May don't even talk to me I don't have the time.
I would say my total cost is less than $5.00. Make one and if you don't like it for shooting you can always use it for cleaning. :)Al |
RE: Rifle rest.
Revises the butt stock end today. The cap makes it so the butt is in the same place every time. Used that tape that goes between the cap and pick up box as a pad.
Seemed to work much better. :DBUT, another post for that question. Remington 700 54 Cal. with 209 conv. :) Al |
