209 Primers and the T/C BD XR
Finially getting around to firingthe T/C Black Diamond XR I got on sale at Cabela's last year. I've cleaned the barrel and charged the speed loaders but I'm wondering what the deal is with the 209 primers. I bought some Winchester 209 primers but they just kinda float there on the breech plug. If I tilt the rifle above level the primer slides off! I was under the impression that it would slide or snap into place. The rifle comes with No. 11 and musket nipples and has the 209 plug/seat installed at the factory.I'm sure it must be my inexperience with shotgun primers on BP guns so I would appreciate any guidance you might care to offer.
Thanks- |
RE: 209 Primers and the T/C BD XR
kymike,
I'm guessing that you lost the spring that wraps around the primer holder. On the spring there's a little finger that applies pressure to the side of the 209 primer. On my T/C 209 Firestorm, the spring was missing too and I had to get a replacement. T/C was real good about it and sent one in the mail free of charge. Hope the picture helps. ![]() |

ENCOREMAN,
That explains it. The little finger on my spring was turned up and not making contact with the primer. Thanks for your great reply. I'm looking forward to getting back into BP as its been better than 20 years since I was active in it. BTW, I'm going to try my hand at taking coyotes with this gun since they are becoming a real problem in this area of Kentucky. A lot of livestock has fallen to them recently and we have several milk goats we show here. Would you recommend a good bullet/powder load to start with for taking coyotes out at say 150-200 yards? I was thinking a fairly lightweight sabot or maxi might do well. Thanks again- Mike |

"Yotes" FUN - get some 200 grain TC shockwaves they will turn them inside out. I would use a 100 grains of t7-2f, but you know cayugad has a Black Diamond, it is not an XR, but he has shot his quite bit - he'll have a good load for you. But any way that is the powder charge I would use to start... but if you are just beginning to shoot ML's you probably should start @ around 80 and work your way up to a load you like... I am to cheap to buy Shockwaves so I bought some Hornady 10mm (40 cal) 200 grain XTP's the other night and those are going to become my "vermit" bullet. Good luck on those "yotes" |
RE: 209 Primers and the T/C BD XR
kymike,
What works in my Blk. Diamond XRmay or may not work for you. Finding the load that works best in your rifleis half the fun. There are so many bullet/sabot combinations, and new powders on the market now that you just have to get in there and try them in your rifle. I do not shoot maxi's out of my Blk. Diamond and I don't know how well they'd shoot for you. I would recommend saving/filing your targets with the loading information you used. This way you have a reference to go back to, with what worked and what didn't work. |

I was thinking a fairly lightweight sabot or maxi might do well. Thanks again- Mike If you want a good long range load get some loose powder and load 110 grains of Triple Se7en and a 200 grain Shockwave with the blue sabot. Very accurate load. With a scope, I am sure that is an easy 150 to 200 yard rifle with PRACTICE. And it would floor a coyote or deer withlittle problem. The 250 grain Shockwaves also shoot real good out of the rifle. I have not done any long distance with pellets yet, but last year we were shooting a pie plate off shooting sticks at 150 yards with the 250 grain shockwaves and 110 grains of Goex 3f and triple se7en 2f. The trouble with some of the bigger conicals are while accurate, they tend to do some dramatic dropping at long distances. They are harder to judge their drop although with practie you could make them work. They would also tend to blow a large hole in a yote if the hide was what you were after. If all you wanted to do was to knock the critter down, then by all means. I just started shooting the rifle with pellets and so far I am really impressed with the accuracy of two pellets and the Shockwaves. A word of warning, after ten shots on the range, check that breech plug to make sure it is not seizing up. And just because the nipple turns, does not mean the breech plug will. I put a very small flat head screw driver in there and just twist it back and fourth to make sure it is loose. Also a Q-tip with some alcohol will clean the breech and nipple real easy in there when that gets fowled. An easy breech plug wrench if you have a scope is a socket with an extension of 8" and a 7/16 or 9/16th deep socket head (one of the narrow ones). It will push right in through the back end of striker area and go over the nipple and breech plug and allow you take them out real fast. I think you will really like that rifle. I think that is one of the most accurate inline rifles out there. I sure like mine. Other then it is a dirty fowling devil.... Keep us posted how it shoots. |
RE: 209 Primers and the T/C BD XR
I think CAYUGAD's Black Diamond is the XR. I think hehassuccessfully usedstandard Winchester & Remington Kleenbore primers in it. That rifle does real well with the #11 cap attachment also using the RWS/Dynamit Noble 1075 percussion caps. Lots & lots of sabot grain combos can be used in that rifle. The ultimate grain sizes are between 240-370 grains from what I've read. I think CAYUGAD has-had good success with No Excuse 460 gr. conicals also. But I do not know if that diameter is the .500s or the .503s??? Whichdiameter has Dave from No Excuse Bullets sent you Mr. Cayugad? I may buy some this spring. |
RE: 209 Primers and the T/C BD XR
I shoot the .503's andI push them with 80 grains of Triple Se7en or 85 grains of Goex 3f. Real accurate shooting load. And I do not use a wad although I got two more boxes from him so I am going to try them with a wad and see if it makes that big a difference. My Black Diamond XR is scoped. It also shoots the 375 grain Buffalo Bullet SSB's that Triple Se7en suggested a while back. With 100 grains of Goex 2f it will lay them in there all day and that all lead bullet will do the job on about anything it hits.
