Is This Normal?
Here'sa target from my session at the range yesterday. Beautiful day; 45 degrees, sunny and calm (in Michigan).
This was my first trial with the .475 x265 grain Hawk HPbullets with a very thin Harvester sabot. They were fired from 25 yards. The group at 1 o'clock is 6 shots with 1 Pyrodex 50 gr pellet. The POA was the edge of the black at 3 o'clock (sorry you can't read the writing - cheap camera). The group at10 o'clock was the same bullet with 2 - 50 grain Pyro pellets. The POA for this group was the bullseye. I made no changes in the scope between groups, and swabbed between each shot with 50/50 IPA andWW fluid. Both groups are slightly left, but is it normal for the group with 50 grains to be higher than that with 100 grains of powder? The other holes with tape are from a 385 Great Plains conical with wonderwad and 100 grains pellets. By the way, the .475 bullets loaded fine in my tight bore. All of the petals came off, and most of the bases landed just short of the 25 yard target. Thanks for your input. IM jaybe :) ![]() |
RE: Is This Normal?
I know with pistols, higher velocity loads usually print lower on a target because they have less barrel time and exit the muzzle lower in the recoil arc.
But mostof the traditional round balltarget shooters I knowADD MOREpowder for longer ranges to keepthe POI upat longer distances. "n" powder for 25yds "nn" powder for 50yds "nnn" powder for 100yds Not sureabout modern inlines with scopes...It's possible when you switched loads and beganthat series, without realizing it you may have been benching the rifle a little differently, and/or holding it a little differently...something...that might haveaffected the recoil arc differently compared to the first series...and very often itdoesn't take much to change the POI |
RE: Is This Normal?
If you have loose powder, try the same type of charges and shooting and see what your results are. This might be something as simple as tuning in the powder charge to the projectile. I personally try new bullets at 85 grains of powder and work from there. I've never tried that projectile.

RE: Is This Normal?
I think Roundball nailed it with his pistol comparison... and your results are not at all unusual. Move the target to 150 yards and see what happens. Then 200.

Hey Jaybe,
Have you shoot this combo anymore? Was thinking about trying the .475 sabots with the 275 Gold Dot's. |
RE: Is This Normal?
Yep...Its normal....Rounball...go in and delete everything after you talked about pistols and you look like a genius...:)
I have seen this with different inlines, trying 250 and 300gr Barnes with the same powder charges....The 300s kick more, so the bullet strikes higher... |
RE: Is This Normal?
Jaybe, it is normal for a real light load to shoot high also as you climb the powder ladder the impact point will first go down then if your gun allows you to go above 120 gr its liable to go up again.
Let me know where you got the .475 265gr hawk bullets and did you get the sabots with them if not what are you using. I am looking for a Hog and Bear load tried the TC big Game 325 gr. but they went totally wild if I had not been shooting ragged holes with Shock waves I would have thought that the scope was loose or something. Might try some .458's - I am using 300 grain hornady's but Speer makes some 350's that are really nice. Cayugad has been shooting the 300's at paper with really good results. The Spreer 350 Flat point would be a devastating bullet equalling the power or doing better than the power of the old 45-70 Government. The energy is awesome, but the trajectory is a loop... ![]() |
RE: Is This Normal?
sabotloader, I have thought about that load,I just have not located any sources or found out what combination will give me the same loading diameter as the Shock Waves which shoot very well out of my Omega.
Also trying to find out how to post pics here but nobody replyies to my E-mails on it.Any hints. Also trying to explain why I need 15 muzzle loaders to my wife, I would blame cayugad, but I am not sure how topronounce it. Thanks Lee |

Posting pictures- first of all your pictures have to be less than 100K in size. Find a picture - right click on the picture -> click on properties that will tell you the size of the picture. If it is bigger than 100k you need to resize it until it is less. Use a picture editing program and resize downward. It will look awful small when you get it to the size needed but it should be OK. After resizing save the picture in it present size - then re-check the size in properties. When you have to correct size - it is time to up-load it. Click on embed picture in post the click click hear to upload then browse to the location of the picture the open then OK and it should start loading. it will tell when it is down or if it is unsuccessful. If you are not in a hurry - I have an Omega coming and I'll test my current sabot bullet combination and let you know. There aresome Omega's that have a really tight bore but if you are currently loading SW with TC sabots you might be able to get this MMP sabot down. It really goes down my Remingtons without a struggle - no short starter just thumb and constant pressure on the ram rod. They really shoot great for me. Cayugad really likes the 300 grain Hollow point. Let me go see if I can find a target... This is another way to post pictures... Post them to a sight like Photobucket. www.photobucket.com -> register yourself and up load your pictures. then copy the address and bring the address here. This is an old target when I first started shooting .458's things are even better now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/sabotloader/458.jpg |
