Turkey loads

I just got the 12 ga for the encore. I was wondering about some loads i have 2# of nickel plated #5s with the multi-metal wads in 3". I have T7, Jim's gold and bm3 for powders to use. I was thinking about starting with 1 1/2oz to start. Any suggestions would be a great help?

gut pile I do not have a 12 gauge but have considered the purchase of a Knight TK2000 just for turkey and duck hunting. So this will be an interesting post.

I measure for my smoothbore; with a second powder measure by volume...

50 grain setting = 3/4 ounce of shot

60 grain setting = 7/8 ounce of shot

70 grain setting = 1 once of shot

80 grain setting = 1 1/8 ounce of shot

90 grain setting = 1 1/4 ounce of shot

100 grain setting = 1 3/8 ounce of shot

110 grain setting = 1 1/2 ounce of shot

120 grain setting = 1 5/8 ounce of shot

I was under the impression that on a black powder shotgun you dropped your powder then pushed a plastic wad into the crown of the rifle, and then with a seperate wad, measured the shot you want and dump that. After that comes the over the shot card when all is seated...

It will be interesting to see what kind of pattern you get and at what distance you get that... I personally shoot between 80-90 grains of powder and 100 grains of #6 shot.

I have a CVA 12 ga. double.use it only for turkey now.

I shoot 120 grain powder, followed by 1 1/2 oz #6 shot.it will do a job out to 30 yards.I try to get them close than that.::::::: thats the name of the game get'em in close.

I pop a couple caps to dry , then I dump the powder, put an overpowder wad, then a shot wad, pour the shot, then an over shot card.ready to hunt.

I have tried several different powder charge and shot loads. the 120/1 1/2 works great for me.

thats the fun of B/P working up a load, shoot, then shoot some more.

one thing about the shotguns, just wipe the barrel and shoot some more.you don't have to stop and clean it like a rifle.

Gutpile, I have been shooting the Knight TK2000 for afew years now, and the load that work's best in my gun is:

100 grains Triple 7 fffg
overpowder wad
shot cup- 3"
2 oz. #5 shot
over shot wad

All gun's shoot differently, but you have the right equipment, so you should be able to dial in a good load. Good luck! If you need more info, post on this thread..................

I shoot the TK2000 as well and my load is

110 grains Pyro RS FFG
No overpowder wad
3-1/2" shot cup
2-1/2 oz #6 shot
over shot wad

Dead on at 35 yds and this could very well get it out to 50 yds easily. I have the confidence in this load but the bird would have to be one of a kind for that shot.

Gutpile, I use the the overpowder wad to prevent the plastic shot cup from getting to hot,and possible melting. You can get a variety of wads from Circle Fly Wads. (www. circlefly.com) Ask to speak with Craig Smith.
The one I use is the 12 gauge cardboard wad. It can be used for over the powder, and overshot wad.

PS: I told you earlier that I used a 3" shot cup. It actually is the 3 1/2" shot cup!! If you need a good deal on these, leave a post on this thread!!
