RUST PREVENTIVE QUESTION

Morning Guys,..Interested in your opinions on Sheath rust preventive as compared to Militec-1.Or,is there there something out ther better still? Are they the same type product, are they used for the same purpose.Should either of them be used in bore? And while your at it how about there use in center fires. The web info. I've read says militec is very good for rifle bores.Supposed to improve accuracy and velosity. At this point, using Sheath on my Omega, not unhappy, just trying to better things if possible. Also need to do some small (lima bean size)blueing touch up.Sad death in the family, and recieved some guns that have some rust on barrell ends, etc. They really don"t need completely re-blued.What seems to be the best spot blue product, with any tips appreciated greatly. As always,it's really nice to get the real deal truth and direction that comes from you guys.

RE: RUST PREVENTIVE QUESTION

I was told about Birchwood Casey products some time ago by Triple Se7en.His advise was as usual, top shelf stuff. He advised that this was some excellent product and that I might want to look into it. I started using Sheath for protecting the barrels and have never looked back since. It is my #1 rust preventative. After that I fall back to Break Free CLP and Rem Oil. Both of them are also outstanding. I do reach for the Sheath though, and use it in my center fire rifles and handguns as well.

As for bluing back spots, Brownell and Birchwood Casey make a bluing product. I have never used them but have read other posts about people who have. They claimed the directions were easy to follow and the results were very good. I guess that is where I would look if I were in your shoes.

I use Otis 0-85 UltraBore in the bore. Clenzoil everywhere else.

RE: RUST PREVENTIVE QUESTION

All I use is Sheath now. Have tried a number but sheath works well inside and outside the bore IME. I also like the smell..LOL!

As far as blue goes. I to was in a similar situation picking up some firearms from a deceased family member that were well used!!! The ones that didn't require a re-blue I simply removed the rust spots with some fine 00 steel wool and gun sheath. Making sure to wipe the area frequently with a rag and re-apply until I removed all the rust from the barrel. I then simply added a thick layer of V80 rust inhibitor to the entire barrel andlet it stand until I used the firearm, at which point I wiped the excess off and applied a thin layer of sheath. OnceI returned it to the cabinet I wipe it down to remove dirt, debris, moisture, etc and again apply a thin layer of sheath for storage. Haven't had a problem to date.

For the bore I would clean with solvent and brush as per norm, then if required hit it with JB Bore paste or similar to remove any pitts or roughness.

As far as the touch up kits I was told by my gunsmith they really don't provide any more protection than light gun oil. Also he said they can mask the problem if not taken care of properly. Now I am sure some of this is to get me to shell out for re-blue..so i took it with a grain of salt. I however haven't seen to many touch ups that were stellar in appearance either, so never went that route as the above method has worked just fine.

Good luck
