Large rifle primers
 

There was a gentleman shooting at our range that was using large rifle primers in a home made set up. He said he tried the small rifle primer set up and had misfires while hunting.
The way he rigged it up was with a brass tube. He said he turned the tube on a lathe so the frount was thin like a shell and sealed and the back fit the primer,he shot for a couple hours and never seamed to have a problem,he switched the tubes in and out just like you would a shell case.
If any one knows any commercial set up where they have some thing that uses large rifle primers and seals up like that to keep the breach area clean I would appreciate them leting me know it looked like the best answer to me. [Also his targets looked like he was shooting a varmit rifle] Lee

Are you aware of the different breech plug conversions? There are several out there that you switch the regular breech plug to a breech plug that you insert a shell casing into.

The 25 acp conversion is one of those conversions - several people have indicated that they an excellent conversion. I have a 32 H&R Magnum conversion for my Austin and Halleck.

Depending on which rifle you are using there may be a conversion for you.

If you are shooting pellets, especially T7 pellets one of these conversions might be what you want. The conversion does clean up the breech area also, they seem to reduce blowback significantly.

I still prefer the 209 breech plug at this time, but I am shooting t7 loose powder.

Sabtloader, the only one for an Omega or system one that I am aware of takes a small rifle primer and I am also aware that quite a few people have misfire problems with them a large rifle primer seamed to be the best answer from what I have seen. Lee

You are totally correct - but an alternative could be the small rifle magum primer.

If you already have the conversion this could possiblysolve the problem of misfires.

I am wondering if these misfires are with t7 pellets. They seem to be the hardest to ignite.

Are you shooting pellets?

I do not have the converson,I was planning on getting it and the guys on some forums I check out now and then were complaining about them so I backed off. Then this fellow was shooting out at cleborne county range when I stopped by with a friend, he said he had misfires while hunting deer with that conversion. He showed me what he was using ; he had bored a breach plug to fit some heavy brass tube,cut the front thin so it would seal like a shell the back end to fit a large rifle primer. He was using Pinnacle and the bullet Hornadymakes like a shock wave only with a red plastic tip; he shot for 2 hours he cleaned his encore twice he never touched the breach area and it looked as clean as a cartridge gun his targets had mostly interlocking holes at 100yd {of course he was shooting off a bench rest. So now I am wondering if there is some thing available or if I might end up buying a small metal lathe. Lee

Well it sounds like this guy needs to get a patent and make some money - becase it sounds like it wouldsolve a lot of problems.

Another thought - how about calling/e-mailing Cecil @ PR bullets he might have some really good thoughts - since he makes a conversion - might even bounce the large rifle conversion off of him.

I converted my Knight Wolverine to Large Rifle Primers about 8 or 9yrs ago. Knight has the inserts to place over the nipple for large rifle primers.
