Wads?
Going to go try Black mag3 powder for the first time tomorrow behind some no excuses 460 grain conicals out of my T/C Omega. Thought I would start at about 80 grains and work up to 100. However, I have heard some people say that they get better accuracy with conicals if you use a wad between the powder and bullet. I have never done this
Do you feel this is true andwould you recommend it? If so, where do you get your wads and how do you load them. I would be concerned that they might get turned sideways in the barrel, especially in an Omega that has a bigger barrel on the end. How do you safely seat them? thanks for any info you can give. I will also do a search and see what has already been discussed |
RE: Wads?
You can buy the wonderwads or bore buttons on line from a number of places. I personally make them with a 1/2 inch hollow hole punch and some construction grade insulation felt. Make sure the felt is 100% wool. You can lube then or shoot them without lube. I lube then.
As for shooting the No Excuse Conicials with wads, you dump your powder put the wad in the bore and push the conical on top of the wad. It will not turn on the way down the barrel. The wad protects the base of the conical from the hot gas of the powder ignition. I personally have shot a lot of the No Excuse Conicals but have not used wads.. as of yet. I do intend to try some of them to see if they make a difference. |
RE: Wads?
thanks for the info. I may try them tomorrow by themselves. If they shoot great anyway, probably won't mess with it. Hope my Omega likes BM3 and the no excuses.

RE: Wads?
My Black Diamond XR does a great job with the 460 grain No Excuse. I shoot them with 80 grains of Triple Se7en or Goex 3f and the accuracy is outstanding. I use no wad and normally use a Winchester W209 primer.

RE: Wads?
I shoot Hornady 410s with a MMP SUB-BASE, I also shoot a 370 Grain Maxi with
a card wad under the bullet! Note: I did make a cutter and open up the Diameters of my Maxi mold. top to bottom-.512-.506-.500. My groups went from 3-4" at 100yds down to 1 1/2 and smaller just by using the sub-base, or a card wad under the bullets. My loads are Goex, 90FF to 115FF, out of my .50 cal. Underhammer with a 1 in 30 twist DeHaas Barrel. Some of the WAD links that I have found http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/browse.cfm/4,4964.html http://www.sagebrushproducts.com/ShootingProducts.... http://www.circlefly.com/ http://www.trackofthewolf.com/categories/tableList... http://www.castbullet.com/wads.htm Some of the more expensive " Veggie" wads are made from: Vegetable fiber gasket material engineered to resist high heat & compression and water resistant. Or you can make your own with some heavy card stock and a Gasget [Arch] punch. |
