Another recovered Shockwave

Hey guys,
Another recovered shockwave, the one on the left.
This one hit a 165 lb buck quartering away. Bullet entered just behind the last rib and was found under the skin on the opposite front shoulder.

As you can see, it looks almost exactly like number two which was a similar shot. From what I can see, the bullets hit, start to deform and at some point tumble. Damage was massive, deer went less than 10 yards.

Is that a 220 grain?

If that's the 250 grain it would be interesting to see how much the thing still weighs. Great pics. It sure shows why the bullet is so excellent in the game taking department...

RE: Another recovered Shockwave

All are 250 grain shockwaves.
The second two retained about 90%.
You can actually see where the little yellow plastic insert indented the lead, especially in the second one, on all three.

This was the subject of bullet number three.

Nice buck - congratulations. Thanks for the Shockwave pics also.

What was the range for these deer and how much powder are you shooting?

I took a couple of deer this year with the Hornady SST 250gr but didn't recover either bullet. Both shots were complete pass-throughs, one behind the shoulder at50 yardsand the other broke the off-side shoulder on the way out from about 100 yards. Nether left much of a blood trail, which is a problem for me in the extreme thick cover I hunt.

I shot a third deer but never found it due to no blood trail. I love the accuracy of these bullets and your pics of the recovered bullets look great, but I'm wondering if I need to be shooting them fasterto get them toopenmore quickly. This season I used 100 grs of 777 pellets.

I am looking at the Hornady XTPs and Speer Gold Dots, which are hollow point bullets, for 2007.

Caller,
Below is an excerpt from the orignal post.

"Some recovered bullets for you to see. The ones on the left are 250 grain shockwaves. The one on the right is a 295 grain power belt. Both the shockwaves were fromdeer at around 100 yards. The bullet on the extreme left was actually head on, head down feeding. The bullet went in between the shoulder blades, through the spine, through the vitals and came to rest under the skin on a buttcheak. The second shockwave went in just behind the shoulder and came to rest under the skin on the opposite buttcheak on a 180# buck. over 90% weight retention in both, but the spine shot took allot of damage to the front of the bullet. The other was a very nice mushroom. I shoot 110 grains of 777 and it is a great load in my encore. "

My guess is that people aren't haveing good blood because they shoot them like a rifle? I shoot M/L like a bow and try to get a good double lung shot. All the recovered bullets were from deer that were either quartering or facing towards me. Bullet had to go almost full lengthwise and stayed in the deer. I have killed 10 deer with these bullets, three were recovered. All gave excellent blood trails, if the shot was made properly.

My personal choice is that I would rather have the improved ballistics beyond 100 yards that the polymer tip offers than the huge damage potential of a hollowpoint.

Really nice pics Hank, I keep seeing all these good
results with the shockwaves. And I like what I see.
They are just so hard to load in my Omega.
But I'm going to take care of that. Would of been
nice to see what the recovered bullets weighed.
Again nice pics & info.

I totally agree with you on ballistics - I just looked up the BC of the 250 shockwave it is listed at .210 - the new Spreer Gold Dot 300 grain HP has a BC of .232. There is not doubt that the ballistic tip improves the ballistics and probably performance of the XTP bullet but I am really thinking these new bonded Speers have something to offer. These bullets are suppose to modeled of the Bear Claw Bonded rifle bullets that Spreer had such great success with, trying to compete with partition bullets.

just a thought...

Yes,
I think bonded bullets have something to offer too. I am going to play with the 200 grain shockwave bonded sabot some this winter. From what I am hearing, it is the next step in the right direction (although I can't be happier w/ the standard 250 grain shockwave). May move to them next year if things look as good as I think they will.
I tried shooting the regular shockwave 200 and 250 over my chronometer a couple of weeks ago. Maybe there is a secret to shooting m/l over a chrony because I got numbers all over the map. The 250s were 2400ish on the high side and 1600 on the low side with junk all in between, also some shots just registering an error. Due to the performance, accuracy, published ballistics w/ 777and consistancy of the shockwaves, I know that there is not that much deviation from shot to shot. I figure I am picking up the sabot on some shots, maybe the smoke is causing problems too.
Anyhow, I'll try again on a sunny day and play with positioning one day next month. If anyone has defeated these problems w/ BP and a chrony, all suggestions are welcome.

ahankster, I fought the chrony battle to and ended up setting it at 25 yd.
This gave me good reasonably consistent readings and if you use a ballistic program you can calculate muzzle volicity. Lee

Ahankster,

Nice buck. You are on my deer hunting contest team. If you shot that buck this year and enter it on the deer hunting forum we will be in the lead. I have shot a whitetail and an antelope this year with the 200g Shockwave and the combined distance traveledfor the two is 20 yards.

aquatech: I'm curious as to how you plan on taking care of the hard loading situation with your Omega; are you planning on lapping the barrel? Have you tried the crush rib sabots? I'm currently waiting for a delivery of some bullet/sabots that are supposed to be easy loading, but I'll soon find out. I have heard about the crush ribs and think I'll probably try some of them with the 300 gr XTP's I have (almost a whole box) to see if I can use them. I believe I saw that the crush ribs are only about .002 smaller than the standard Harvester sabots, so I don't know if that will be enough to make a difference. We'll see.

IM jaybe :)

BGHunter,
That is the third buck I have shot this year. Killed three does too. Killed a little 7 point, a fonky 5 point and this guy. One of the does was with a bow. The little guy to my left in the pic has killed a doe and spike too.
We can only shoot muzzle loaders, shotguns and bows where I hunt, so I just use an Encore year round.

Nice deer! Sounds like you had a great season. I'm in the same boat here in IN being able to use only shotgun/muzz/bow, but thats the way I like it. Looks like the boys are enjoying it also, I love hearing about kids getting into the sport and seeing thier excitement during the hunt. Here is a picture of my son and I with this years buck (shot with a 200g shockwave). He's a little to young to hunt (2 yrs old), but he threw an absolute fit until I agreed to come home and get him and take him to help with the drag. Anyway, when you score your deer send that info along with the photo the the moderator and we should be in first place.
