Found my load
OK, after another day at the range this is what I'm going with.
I shot 5 different 3 round groups. This one is average. I'm pretty happy with the results. This was shooting off a bench with no vise. If I do close to this well in the field I ought to be OK. I will be using shooting sticks afield so using the bench isn't too far from hunting conditions, well besides buck fever, low light maybe, etc. etc. and all the other variables! Sabotloader the sabots I have are stepped in the cup with machined, (molded), numbers. I tried them again and they are just too tight. I'll stick with the Hogden Great Plains HB HP 385gr. for now as I like the results. I hope to post a picture of a hog dropped with one this weekend. Wish me luck! Thank you all for your help on my quest. Greg AKA Txrookie ![]() |
RE: Found my load
With groups like that, and the bullet you are using, I feel sorry for the hogs!

RE: Found my load
With a rifle that shoots Great Plains Conicals that well, you have not need to worry about sabots being tight. You have a great load there and a great rifle. That will flatten Porky for sure. I will be looking forward to the hog pic. Good luck and NICE SHOOTING THERE!!

RE: Found my load
Looks like good hog poison. I'd like to work up a good conical load for my .45 Optima, those conicals are so much easier to load than sabots.
For years I hunted with home-cast Maxis and they shoot with excellent results in many of my sidelocks. Pennies a shot when you cast 'em yourself. Only taken two hogs myself with front-stuffers, my father's shot about five. Do you sometimes find that when you shoot at game that you have to jump up and run through the smoke to keep your eyes on the critter afterwards? Pretty comical to watch I figure. 'Popper |
