my first deer with new smoke pole

just thought i would let every one see what i had for dinner last night back strap fried, mashed tater`s and biscuits and gravey. if you can see the knot on his neck i thought that was a tummor turned out to be a 240 grain jacketed hollow point. thank you all for the advice a couple weeks ago. next weekend im off to mingo wildlife refuge for a special hunt hope to have more pictures for you. happy new year.

That's a fine looking deer.. CONGRATULATIONS!!

How far away was the deer from you when you shot? What rifle were you using? What powder charge and projectile? Where did you hit it? What kind of damage did the projectile do? And how far did the critter manage to run after you blasted it? I think most of us here enjoy the hunting story as well, and great pictures.

It sounds like you ate like a king on the last day of the year. Back straps have to be one of my favorite parts of a deer. I like to butter fly them, then rub the with a little olive oil, salt and pepper them and throw them on the gas grill until medium rare. Add some potatoes and a salad with about a gallon of hot coffee and it just does not get better then that.

Good luck with your future hunts. Does this mean you like hunting with a black powder rifle? :D

Congratulations! I too got my first one this year and I can say I will never hunt without a ML again. It's just so damn fun to shoot and knowing you have one shot makes you focus so much more. The feeling you get is so hard to describe, its almost like your a kid on christmas and you got what you really wanted. Good luck on your hunt, that's when I got my big one.

Congratulations...and to be sure you know...muzzleloading is asickness for whichthere is no cure...you can only keep it in remission by going deeper and deeper into it...ultimately stepping backwards to caplocks, then to flintlocks, etc...but it's a great sickness...enjoy!!

were did you shoot her that it ended up in the neck??

RE: my first deer with new smoke pole

I brown them in olive oil, butter, a little garlic and onion powder.
Right at the point when they are brown all over, I take a sharp knife
and butterfly them down the middle and turn the opening into the hot olive oil
for just a minute. Yank them off the heat and eat 'em.
Oh, yum yum butterum.

Congrats on the kill..I am still waiting to do that with a ML.

me too, livbucks, i am only seeing doe ,no bucks. i seen 2 bucks first week of season but with 3 point to 1 side rule here now in pa. they got away. i like the AR here in pa.open sights is fun and 1 shot is too, then throw in the AR here in pa. more fun. i am about the only one hunting with flintlock in regular season.i am still hunting for buck as i dont kill doe.its hard now to see buck with horns but you never know. take care.

Keep your chin up Sproulman,
I see bachelor groups with racks in early March almost every year, so there are some with horns on their heads right now.
The little bucks are the ones to drop early, at least where I live.
The rut is over so they are back to laying low during daylight now. I see the bachelor groups usually on the first sunny, still day in March on the hill across from my Dad's place. They apparently like the warm sun on the ridge after a long winter.

i saw 8 point today killed by friends.nice rack too.it was raining all day ,so i did not go and getting tired, you know what i mean. boy, i have woods all to myself here. not many tracks. its getting like hunting in maine here in 2g wmu, very few deer.take care.

RE: my first deer with new smoke pole

I know,
The bucks aren't moving and nobody to push them. Makes it tough.
I have not been out on account of the rain. I used my buck tag so
if I go I will be taking my son to do the flinter shooting. I will just
do the loading and stuff. Makes no diff to me though as I would be
even happier to see him get one with a flintlock before me. Plus,
he can take any buck with horns on account of being a junior hunter.
I have a doe tag but don't really care to take one. I have alot of meat now as it is. I don't really care all that much to take a doe, I just got
a tag for an excuse to go sit in the woods if a nice day presents itself.
Gotta keep my options openya know?

RE: my first deer with new smoke pole

Congrats, nice Doe there and a dandy eater I am sure.

Igot my second deer with a smoke pole the last day of ML season here, it sure is addicting.

I was waiting for a Buck being as I had already shot a nice Doe, but late in the day the only thing I had to choose from were two big yearlings. They both presented themselves in front of me for over 15 mins before I decided to go ahead and take one as I may not get another chance, less than an hour to sunset. They had milled around from about 100 yards out to less than 30 yards when I took the shot. Being a meat hunter I popped him right in the back of the head, he never even twitched a muscle. I was sure onehad knots on his head so I shot the other, turns out he did too.

I really dont like to take button bucks, ya never know what they might be in a few years but I am sure he will be a tasty eater.

Again congrats on your hunting experience!

RE: my first deer with new smoke pole

I'm curious about the bullet in the neck. Was that your bullet that traveled there or was it someone else's bullet? Where did that bullet in the neck enter from?

I'm asking because I have shot a lot of deer in the neck and the results have always been instantaneous and that is much higher shot than I usually take.

Thanks
Tom

RE: my first deer with new smoke pole

it wasnt really in the neck i just said that it was in the shoulder. i shot that deer on a hill it went in behind the shoulder on one side took out the heart and one lung and stopped in the other shoulder a little higher on the other side.
