Windshield Washer/Alcohol Sol. ?

Hey guys,

Can I use the windshield washer/alcohol solution to clean my normal center fire rifles? If not, why not?

Thanks
Tom

I suppose you could although I don't.

Nitro-based powders leaves so little residue from the powder, you will be removing basically the fouling from the primer.

I would think a quality bore solvent that removes copper and lead onoccassionfollowed by a equally quality gun oil would be a better solution.

I like the windex/alcohol solution better. I also run CVA sabot solvent through when I clean after I am finished shooting.

Cayugad put me on to this homemade solution and I like it. It doesn't freeze in cold weather (I've hunted down to 9 degrees F with it), cleans well, evaporates fast, leaves no residue, and the price is terrific!

When I do a thorough cleaning I use this solution and follow with dry patches until completely dry. I then swab with a couple of patches with Birchwood Casey Borescrubber which will remove remove all types of fouling (plastic, copper, lead, nitro), dry patch until they come out clean, then finish with Birchwood Casey Sheath for storage.

Anyone care to share this windshield wiper/alcolhol formula with the rest of us?
I am a noob, and could use some tricks under my hat

50/50 91% isopropyl alcohol and car windshield washer fluid. That is the standard formula. For a sidelock rifle I will often times swab with pure alcohol because it drys out of the barrel faster. There is then less chance of moisture sitting in the breech and contaminating the powder charge or the #11 cap flash.

Cuyagard,

Can I use this on a center fire rifle? Why or why not?
