Rats in frazzin
Doing a Souther Michigan Muzzle loader hunt. Cold and dry this year. Used my Remington 700 54cal. Friday. In the evening I wanted to fire it off and it did finally after 3 cocks with the same #11 CCI mag caps. There was a good click, I felt from the fireing pin/hammer With both rifles. Decided To use my TC great plains 50Cal side lock and the cap had to be hit twice for it to go off this morning too. Only took it out this morning too. Are these caps not so good in the cold or what???? The triple 7 isn't the problem the caps are failing.

RE: Rats in frazzin
I have a friend who's Rem700 would do the same thing even if the weather was warm sometimes. he ended up detailing the firing pin and the inside of the bolt and made sure it was kept extreamly clean. Also using a very light oil like sewing machine oil will keep thing moving in the deep cold. Same with your sidelock I use very little oil just enough to protect it from rust so things don't gum up in there.
As far as the CCI caps in the cold I havn't had a problem shooting them even at zero. |
RE: Rats in frazzin
Learned a long time ago when I was young and dumb not to use any oil on a Remington bolt. Only use the dri lube as the Remington bolts will freeze up if oil is used in the cold.

RE: Rats in frazzin
I had the same problem with my remington 700 SS 50 caliber... Using CCI 11 mag caps. they would never fire the fire time, always on the 2nd or third... I tried remington caps during the same session and had 100% first timefires. at least on my rifle the CCI seem a tad tighter on the nipple, and the first hit seems to seat them and second time sets them off......the remington 11 caps are just the tinyiest bit wider, at least the onesI have compared tothe CCI 11's,,,, just my 2 cents

RE: Rats in frazzin
I hope I dont have problems with my CCI's. I heard these are good. http://www.dnrws.com/perc_caps.html If I have problems with CCI's I might try those. Maybe even musket caps.

Rem 700 are somewhat notorious for this problem. I have two of them, one is an original first round 24" barrel SS and the other is the newer 26" SS barrel... I believe I have this problem whipped! I'll make a big assumption here that you have dis-assembled your bolt removing the firing pin, hood, and spring from the bolt housing and cleaned the heck out that and the inside of the bolt housing especially where the hammer assemble comes through the bolt. I do use Rem Oil or any quality light weight oil to lubricate the spring & hood assembly. Remington techs will tell you 99% of the timethe problem lies in the bolt. The Remington has such a short pin throw. Next the original firing pin spring - It is my belief that the factory spring is really weak, in fact if you order a new spring from Remington it willbe a stronger spring. I have forgot a lot of this since it has been so long ago that I did this - the factory spring is 22/24lbs? You can purchase from Brownells a 30# spring for a Remington 700 short action and this will take care of the problem. If you do this and you replace the spring really be careful dry firing it will not take to long to ruin your nipple. I have converted both of my Remington's to 209's and I used the Cabelas conversion - this conversion comes with the stouter spring and all the tools needed to make the conversion, even without the tools you can change the spring - if you are interested let me know and I can help walk you through the process - it is not real difficult but there a couple quirks. Good luck |
RE: Rats in frazzin
Yeh my buddy thought of replacing the spring but after detailing the firing pin and the cylinder it rides in he doesn't have the problem anymore unless the gun is extreamly fouled. He does have to take the bolt apart and clean it after every shooting session but it insures the rifle will always go off.

RE: Rats in frazzin
Yes I have taken the bolt apart, every time I finish a section of shooting or hunting. Years ago I had a center fireing pinthat froze up during the season. Not knowing that it was froze I thought it was broke. The gun smith told me to never oil the bolt on Remingtons as the tolerances were to tight, us dri slide or some thing like that.
Polished the bolt yesterday but haven't fired it yet to see if that helped. HUMM 209 conversion, Yes that does intrest me. :) Al |

In my opinion this is the best conversion out there... I controls blowback so well that I am able to cut and use the plastic from a 20 guage shot casing for the weather shroud. Very little pressure at a on the weather shroud. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0006644214451a&type=product&cm Cat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3Aha sJS=+&QueryText=209+conversion&_DARGS=%2Fc abelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.22&Go.x=9&Go.y=11&N=4887&N tk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Nt t=209+conversion&noImage=0&returnPage=sear ch-results1.jsp But since you know about the bolt and have been cleaning - don't rule out the nipple rounding over from being hit they do - do that. If you go with the conversion you will get a 28# spring also if my memory is right... I have all of this written down some where. Good luck |
RE: Rats in frazzin
I'm not a fan of CCI caps. However, it could be they soaked up some moisture. I would pick up some new caps to be sure.
Irely onRWS Dynamit-Nobel #1075 percussion caps. Simply the best and most reliable percussion cap I have ever used. Several thousand shots. Sounds like you have a handle on the Rem700 firing pin. You really need to detail clean it afterevery time you fire it (I do mine) and either dry lube or use a high quality synthetic lube. I lubemy Rem700ML bolt andfiring pinwith a light coating of Clenzoil and then wipe everything off with a dry cloth so there is only a very light film. Clenzoil works excellent on all mybolts and firing pins and lock mechanisms. You also may have weak main springs in the firing pin of the Rem700 and on your sidelock. They are an easy change. T/C will send you a new main spring for simply a phone call. Good Luck! Tahquamenon |
