What do you think of these?
What do you think of these nipples for musket caps? I shoot a TC 54.cal. I THINK it is a renegade.

This nipple is for an inline breech plug it will not fit your side hammer... This nipple will fit your TC cap lock. Although I really do not like this nipple, you can not see it in this picture but the nipple is open from the the threads up ( has a cavity - sort of like a hollow point bullet) After several rounds I have actually had one of the nipples break off at the top of this cavity leaving the threads in breech plug... Another thing you might consider - Thompson nipples are shorter than most standard replacement nipples, moving to a taller replacement nipple can change how the hammer drops on the cap allowing some of the spark to get blown out the front and not down the flash channel. My 2 cents - the #11 magnum caps and TC #11 nipples are the best wayto go... As several others indicated to you the "Dynamit Nobel 1075 plus" caps are really good. There are some problems that go along with musket caps - although I have them and have shot them quite a bit. Hunting even in the coldest weather I am going to use #11's |
RE: What do you think of these?
Before you go looking for something bigger and better as you think, have you tried the #11 caps yet? I have shot literally thousands of rounds through sidelocks using #11 caps and could count the misfires on my hands. Most misfires as you will find out is the loaders fault and not the rifle. A #11 cap is more then able to fire off your renegade. Besides if your rifle is real old, beware of too much blow back on the hammer as it could (not always mind you) have a negative effect on the hammer spring..

RE: What do you think of these?
A guy next to me at the range had five straight misfires with his CCI-Mag #11 caps. We took out his breechplug & sprinkled powder there. Again... no fire! I gave him a RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075 cap & the powder ignited. His caps were new in the box & I recall my Nobels were twice as loud as his CCI-mag caps when he dry-fired 4-5 after arrivingto clear the plug before starting to load his first charge of the day.
If I could only buy one brand of nipple for my T/Cs... this would be it. You need 1/4 X 28 size. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712&id=0012627 210268a&navCount=6&podId=0012627&paren tId=cat20819&navAction=push&catalogCode=IF &rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat2081 9&hasJS=true |

Another thought... I THINK it is a renegade. Do you have the ML yet? It sounds like you are pretty sure it is a 54 Cal - that is stamped on the barrel also... |
RE: What do you think of these?
All my Renegades are stamped Thompson Center .54 caliber Renegade on the side of the barrel. And also the Hawkins rifles are notmarkedHawkins but they are marked Thompson Center Arms 50 caliber.

RE: What do you think of these?
It says "Tompson Center Arms 54. Cal".
Are the Dynamit Nobel 1075 plus caps just as hot or hotter than the CCI #11 mags? |
RE: What do you think of these?
The Dynamite Noble 1075 are an excellent quality cap. They happen to be my favorite cap.
As for your rifle it could be a number of different models. It is a Thompson Center and a .54 caliber but there were a number of different models made in the .54 caliber. The main thing it is a .54 caliber and it is a Thompson Center. If there is a lot of brass like a patch box on it then it is probably a Hawkins, if it has two triggers it could be a Renegade but normally they state Renegde on them although I looked at some of my old Renegades in the other gun rack, and there is one that is about 25 years old that the barrel does not say Renegade, but I am certain it is a Renegade because I built the kit. So I really would not worry about it. You have a great rifle and it will shoot great. |
RE: What do you think of these?
No brass, 2 triggers, and old.
|
RE: What do you think of these?
Kirk.. I will guess it is an old kit Renegade. That sounds just like mine. The reason I say it is a Renegde is the other models, many of them had single triggers. Roundball could tell you more about the double trigger Thompson Center no frills rifles, he is a collector I think.
