What about going to musket caps?
Hey, I heard musket caps burn hotter. Any one use them? I was thinking about getting a musket cap nipple. What are the caps called? Just musket caps? Also I heard they are hard to keep on unlike #11 caps. Why is that? Any advice?

RE: What about going to musket caps?
That is what I use and I like them. They suposedly burn a bit hotter but I like them because they are bigger and easier to manipulate. They are much easier to put on and take off for me.

I've never needed musket caps for reliable ignition. But then I don't shoot pyrodex or pellets which can require a hotter ignition for best reliability.
Pyrodex has the highest flashpoint among all powders I am aware of. RWS Dynamit-Nobel #1075 (#11) percussion caps. Tens of thousands of shots without a single misfire because of the cap. http://www.dnrws.com/perc_caps.html Ted Cash cappers are also excellent. http://www.tdcmfg.com/ Tahquamenon |

i love them because they are bigger in your hand. also you can just give them a little squish and they fit nice and tight on the nipple. i love them!

I like the # 11 CCI magnum caps, they always work, havent had a misfire since using them, plus i can get them locally. The RWS are good as well, just harder to find and I dont want to pay the hazmat fee for shipping.

I have a nipple adapter device that uses small rifle primers (Fusil V), and one that allows me to use No. 209 shotgun primers on a sidelock rifle. I find the 209's (Win.) to be the hottest of all, as they will put a visible flash all the way out the muzzle of the rifles I have used it on. Some claim that a LR magnum primer is hotter than a 209. May be,but I'd have to see this to believe it. |
RE: What about going to musket caps?
How would you compare a musket cap to a 209? Are they about the same? If the CCI mags give just as much ignition as the musket cap and the musket cap gives just as much as a 209 then the CCI mags would be just as good as 209's. So basicly the #11 CCI mags, the musket caps, and the 209's would have the same ignition. I will be using pyrodex in maybe cold weather but not too bad. So I want the hottest ignition. In CO I cant use 209's. I would want the #11 mags or musket caps.

Were musket caps made before the #11's?

But, just because a certain cap produces the same flame temperature as a 209 primer, does NOT mean they are the equivalent in iginition capabilites. The AMOUNT or volume of the flame, and its explosive velocity, are both significant factors also. These two factors depend on the amount of the priming mixturein the cap/primer, ANDthe ingredients from which that mixture is made as well. I have yet to see a musket cap that gives anywhere near the blast out the muzzle of my rifles as I get from the Winchester 209s that are made for use as ML primers. The RWS musket caps may, I cannot say. I have only used the ALCAN musket caps and the CCI brand. Neither of these were as hot as a Win. 209 primer! But as others have noted, the musket capssure are easier to handle in cold weather than a No. 11. |
RE: What about going to musket caps?
Triple Se7en when used in sidelocks and many inlines does not always produce the dreaded crud ring. Also many times the crud ring is very easy to remove. It must vary from rifle to rifle. My Black Diamond XR for instance does not seem all that bad when shooting T-7. I've shot it out of sidelocks and it works great..
