Remember what great great grand dad used these for?
 

This was under my deer blind in the hardwoods this year. I was very happy to find it since I have been down to dryer lint. So does any one know what great great grand dad used this for?

just from what your describing, did you find a batch of paper wasp nesting which used to be used between the powder charge and the projectle to act as a buffer. If you did see wasp nesting, be sure the stuff is old. They do not take kindly to being shoved down the barrel of a rifle...

Yes it is a Bald Faced Hornets nest from this summer. No need to worry about hornets being in there after the first frost. All the hornets die except the queen who finds a nice warm place to hibernate. Honey bees on the other hand don't hibernate.

Yes Great Great grand dad used the hornets nest in his deer rifle to asorbe any of the bacon grease he used on his ball & patch so the powder didn't get contamanated. I use them between the powder and patched ball too in my TC hawkins. Of course today I use bees wax on the patches so it is a matter of past pratice.
GGD passed that rifle down to my GD who passed it to my dad. Dad hunted with that rifle till I was about 5 when he bought a used 30 30 Winchester. He lost both in a house fire in 1954.

Wasp nest wadding! I've never found one as good as that one!
