here maybe another dumb question but when I buy some conicals the prelubed kind do I need to use a wad or something to seperate the powder and bullet or not??

I have found a wonder wad to help accuracy with certain bullets - like the T/C Maxihunter and Maxiball - but not help with others like the Buffalo Bullets. I have also used plastic wads, like the Ballistic Bridge sub base and 28 guage AA pink shotgun wads (petals cut off), to help insulate the bullet from the heat and pressure of the charge - with mixed results as well. Just have to try this stuff and see how your guns likes it.

I think you only need to use a patch with a roundball.

The old rule of thumb does not always hang true but it used to be if the conical had a flat base, then you put a wonderwad between the bullet and the powder. If it had a hollow base you did not. Some people will pack a hollow base with bore butter before they shoot. I do not.

All you can do like Roskoe said is try the different combinations and see what happens. Some of my rifles like the wads and others hate them...

This question is aimed for ROSKOE and any others how could chime in for safety sake but i just post a thread about ML shotguns. Then I noticed that you were talking about using a twenty eight gauge shotgun wad to seal off conicals. Could I get a real cheap fifty cal CVA and use it for a twenty eight gauge shotgun if I was not to worry about the riflings in the barrle? Or could this be unsafe?

I don't think safety would be as much of an issue as terrible patterns. Rifled bores tend to throw donut shaped patterns. You could have a gunsmith bore the barrel out to 20 guage and install the screw in choke tubes - making it a functional shotgun.

I would think you could get this done for about fifty bucks - find a local gunsmith who has the correct reamer and extensions. The screw-in choke installation usually runs an additional $75, and should include at least one choke tube.
